After doing an afternoon tea staycation post earlier this week, I thought I needed to do a post on some destinations a little bit further afield so let me introduce you to some alternative city breaks in Europe to take in the coming months.

Marseille, France

France’s second largest city; once deemed a city to avoid,  it’s now one of France’s best kept secrets.  It’s such a delightful city to visit and the pastel colour streets and beautiful architecture will make you fall in love with Marseille.  You can read my City Break to Marseille post by clicking right here and my second visit to Marseille right here.

Luxembourg City, Luxembourg

A great little destination for a quickie break if you are struggling with time and a great place to take the kids if you are travelling with them the first time. Luxembourg City is compact, doesn’t have all the hordes of tourists seen in the more popular city break destinations, green and ever so child friendly.  You can read my City Break to Luxembourg post by clicking right here.

alternative-city-breaks-in-europe

Porto, Portugal

The city of Porto has been on my wish list for a number of years and after reading Elle’s posts on the destination last year here and here I was desperate to visit.  You can read my city guide to Porto here.

Krakow, Poland

This Polish city has so much to offer that I would suggest extending it from a quick weekend break to spending at least 4 nights in the city to visit all the incredible sights the city has to offer. A day trip to the Salt Mines and Auschwitz is a must.  You can read my City Break to Krakow post by clicking right here.

alternative-city-breaks-in-europe

Athens, Greece

I’m not sure why Athens isn’t a more popular city break destination; it has so much to offer. From incredible historic sights, amazing museums, fabulous shoe shopping and don’t even get me started on the food. The flying time is just under four hours however don’t let this put you off as the extra time spent on the plane is so worth it!  You can read my City Break to Athens post by clicking right here.

alternative-city-breaks-in-europe

Verona, Italy

The city of love; is this Europe’s most romantic city? Shakespeare set Romeo and Juliet in fair Verona and the city makes a perfect city break destination as it’s small and compact. If you’re visiting during summer than try and get tickets to the Opera that is played in the Arena (Roman Amphitheatre).  You can read my City Break to Verona post by clicking right here.

alternative-city-breaks-in-europe

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

I’m adding Amsterdam to my alternative city break list as the city is shedding it’s dirty drug / sex image and becoming a luxury city break hot spot. If you’re an art lover, this city is the perfect destination for a quickie city break (excuse the pun).  You can read my City Break to Amsterdam post by clicking right here.

alternative-city-breaks-in-europe

Dusseldorf, Germany

Most city breakers head to Berlin and Munich if wishing to visit Germany however I’m going to suggest Dusseldorf. The city offers incredible shopping however if you are keen on heading to the Christmas Markets, fly into Dusseldorf, visit the markets there and then jump on the train for the short journey to visit the bigger Christmas Market in Cologne.  You can read my City Break to Dusseldorf post by clicking right here.

alternative-city-breaks-in-europe

Vienna, Austria

If you eat a lot of cake and base your holidays around this requirement then let me recommend a visit to Vienna; the home to so much cake that you will possibly need to buy two seats on the return flight back home! The city is just stunning and I would return in an instant as I found three nights wasn’t enough to enjoy this delightful city break destination.  You can read my City Break to Vienna post by clicking right here or my Gluttons Guide to Eating Cake in Vienna post.

alternative-city-breaks-in-europe

Split, Croatia

Don’t overlook this beautiful Adriatic city; the city has so much to offer and there is nothing more beautiful than sitting in Diocletians Palace on a balmy summers evening having dinner. The city is so much cheaper to travel to than Dubrovnik and I would high recommend trying to rent an apartment in the Old Town to really enjoy your stay.  You can read my Split vs Dubrovnik post by clicking right here.

Poland’s two biggest cities are perfect for a weekend away from the UK but which destination gives you more for your city break adventure.  Let’s put these two cities against each other and see who wins – Warsaw vs Krakow!  Let’s get ready to roll!

What is there to do?

Warsaw – The aptly name “Phoenix City” is a survivor and offers travellers an Old Town which has been painstakingly rebuilt and restored to it’s former glory.  The square offers many tourist restaurants and drinking establishments where you can people watch but watch out for the cheeky little birds that visit your table.  Many of the famous landmarks of Warsaw are within easy walking distance of each other.

The Warsaw Uprising Museum is one of the best museums you will find in Europe, offering the visitor a detailed history of Poland’s 1944 battle for independence. The museum is very interactive and is worth checking out.

Krakow – As soon as you arrive into Krakow you will feel the very artistic and intellectual vibe that rules this city however the city feels very young at the same time. The main draw card is obviously the Old Town however if you want to avoid the tourists head to Kazimierz which is where all the cool kids hang out and where you can find the best blueberry ice cream and little independent shops run by artists.

Schindler’s Museum offers a great insight into Krakow during WW2 and I highly recommend you make the time to visit the museum if you can. Wawel Castle is just majestic and well worth a guided tour as the Polish have a very deep love for this Castle.

On the outskirts of Krakow you have Auschwitz and the Salt Mines which I would also recommend.

Luxury Accommodation

Warsaw – well look no further than the Intercontinental Hotel which offers one of Europe’s highest swimming pools and some of the best views over Warsaw – just a little photo of the view from our 37th floor window. The Club Lounge is even higher up and has stunning 180 degree views over the city.  The hotel is about a twenty minute walk from the Old Town which can be a distance on a rather hot day.

Krakow – look no further than the Sheraton – pop upstairs to the rooftop terrace bar for a few cocktails which overlooks Wawel Castle and the river.  Or if you are feeling energetic you can borrow bikes from the hotel and ride through the numerous parks in the city.  The Sheraton is a winner when it comes to location, Wawel Castle is located within a short walk from the hotel and the Old Town is around a 5 minute walk.

Getting to Poland

Warsaw – Getting to Warsaw is pretty easy as most of the big airlines fly direct to Warsaw including British Airways and at very reasonable prices. You can either catch the train from the airport or take a taxi – as Poland is super cheap (it’s not on the Euro) catching a taxi isn’t going to break the bank.

Krakow – Getting to Krakow is the difficult part – there are some direct flights with Ryanair and EasyJet however the flight times are a little bit chaotic for my liking. No one wants to arrive at 1am in the morning or grabbing a 6am flight!  A number of airlines offer a flight via Warsaw ex London – if the layover is only short then I would highly recommend doing this rather than booking a flight into Katowice Airport.

Katowice Airport will add approximately 2 hours onto your journey time – I know this as I took this option and I regretted it!

Overall – Warsaw is perfect if you only have a weekend and are short of time; the direct flights from the UK are a blessing.  If you have 3-4 nights then I would highly recommend visiting Krakow due the abundance of things to do however you could see a majority of the sights in a weekend if you were selective of what you wanted to see.

Which city is your favourite?

After falling in love with the Starwood Hotel brand on my recent trip to Athens, I decided to use them again for our city break weekend in Krakow – so let me introduce you to the Sheraton Krakow.

Poland Travel Inspiration - Thinking of visiting Poland on your next vacation to Europe then why not check out my hotel review of this Starwood Brand luxury hotel in Krakow. The Sheraton Krakow has a great location and an amazing rooftop cocktail bar overlooking the famous castle. Click the link to read more of my hotel review of The Sheraton, Krakow.

The Sheraton was celebrating it’s 10th birthday on the Sunday that we were leaving (bad timing for us as there was an awesome HUGE and I mean HUGE birthday cake in the lobby for the celebration).  The hotel location is within a short hop, skip and a jump from Wawel Castle and a 5 minute walk from the Old Town – the perfect location in Krakow.

First impressions of the Sheraton Krakow is wow; you are greeted by friendly staff, checked in with ease and then offered a complimentary drink – the drink was a godsend on arrival after travelling from Katowice Airport with a raging cold; it was just what the doctor ordered.

So are ready for a snoop inside our room, let’s go!  I had booked us into a Twin Club Room which offered access to the Club Lounge and we received this very comfortable room for our stay which came with our own Krakow Dragon to protect us two fair kiwi maidens.  I should point out our little Krakow Dragon is now winging it’s way down to New Zealand as we loved him so much!

The beds are super comfy and can hold over 20 books; just in case you needed to know that.  My sister was after some light night time reading during our stay.

The room was tastefully decorated in neutral colours and included complimentary water, coffee machine and tea making facilities.

Now when it comes to welcome gifts, Starwood Hotels are the top dogs!  They seriously know how to spoil a girl or princess – shoes and a fabulous selection of yummy fruit!   I really wanted a version of these Polish Slippers but couldn’t find a pair in my size when I went shopping – dare I say it, the shoe shopping goddesses were not on my side that weekend!

I love staying at a hotel where staff members are happy and cheerful as their smiles are catching and you just can’t stop smiling yourself.  We had numerous encounters with smiley happy staff and many giggles; from the funny revolving door incident through to the lovely lady doing our turn down service asking if we would like more chocolate ahh yes please!

One of the big reasons why I wanted to stay at the Sheraton Krakow was the Rooftop Bar – it’s pretty impressive with views over the River and Wawel Castle.  To get a serious case of Krakow wanderlust then you must follow the Sheraton Krakow on Instagram.  We had an awesome evening taking in the views and drinking cocktails and I highly recommend the Fluffy Kiwi!  Cocktails cost less than £5 each so they aren’t going to break the bank even if you are on a budget.

I’m a big lover of Club Lounge access.  Now if you don’t know what this is – it’s access to a Lounge inside the hotel (many of the big 5 star properties have these lounges) and they offer guests staying in the Club Rooms or who have Platinum status in their loyalty programs (depending on the hotel chain) access where the guests can come and go as they please – the Lounge offers complimentary drinks, breakfast, light meals and newspapers.

I highly recommend using the Club Lounges as if you are on the go sightseeing, this Lounge can be a godsend as you can grab a quick something to eat or a bottle of water before heading out again.  And yes there is complimentary wine, beer and spirits on offer!

The Club Lounge at the Sheraton Krakow is probably one of the best I have seen and I was impressed with the food selection.  You’ve heard of the Cookie Monster well my sister and I were the Prawn Monsters – we ate lots and lots of Prawns as they were so good!  The lounge had a view over the atrium and was light and airy.

For some reason I didn’t take a photo of my breakfast (I took my camera but obviously I lost concentration as there was food in front of me!) however I had a great omelette – a fantastic and fuss free gluten free breakfast.  The staff were clued up on gluten free alternatives which was fabulous. The following morning we left the hotel to catch our flight before breakfast started and the hotel were more than obliging to provide us with a breakfast bag each – including a gluten free one for me!  Top marks to the Sheraton Krakow for this!

Would I recommend this 5 star hotel – Yes!  If you are a princess then I would highly recommend checking into the Sheraton Krakow rather than Wawel Castle.  The food, drinks and service are amazing and I would recommend this be your first choice when staying in Krakow.

You can book the Sheraton Krakow directly through the Starwood Hotel website and if you are looking for some ideas what to do on your Krakow holiday then check out my post here on this beautiful city.

Jonathan Carroll once said “Krakow is one of my favourite places on earth.  It is a medieval city full of young people.  A wonderful, striking combination” and this sums up Krakow to a tee!  I’m going to show you why you need to book that city break to Krakow!

My sister’s last weekend in Europe was to be spent in Krakow, Poland so I jumped on a Wizz Air flight to meet her and have a lovely luxury weekend away together in Krakow.  Our hotel of choice for the weekend was the Sheraton Krakow and let me tell you – it’s pretty darn amazing!  I would highly recommend staying there and I will be doing a full review shortly.

From the moment you step into the Lobby you are greeted by the friendliest staff and a lovely welcome drink; which was most definitely welcome as it was a blooming sauna outside and I was suffering from a raging cold!

I have come to the conclusion that the SPG chain of hotels provide the best welcome gifts a girl can wish for!  Yummo!

Poland is my sisters favourite country in the world so she is the perfect tour guide especially as this was her fourth visit to this beautiful city.  It was my second visit to Krakow and I just couldn’t believe how much the city had changed in over ten years!

Lisa had an itinerary planned for the weekend and it consisted largely of food, book shopping, music and just strolling through the gorgeous pastel streets of Krakow.

Our first stop was Moa Burgers, where the hip kids go to eat burgers and hey its run by a Kiwi so we have to support our whanau!  My sister and folks rave about these burgers and say they are the best in Europe.  There aren’t any gluten free buns however the staff very kindly cooked me up a chicken fillet and I had the best chips and coconut milkshake that a Kiwi could wish for.

After a big refuel via Moa Burgers it was onto doing some sightseeing and the first stop was St. Mary’s Basilica which is just incredible.  Remember to look up and if I can offer one tip, it is to pay the small camera charge when buying your entrance ticket so that you can take some photos as it’s just so darn cute inside.

As St Mary’s Basilica is located in the Square of the Old Town we had a walk around quickly before catching the tram to Kazimierz to stroll through the prettiest area of Krakow.  The area is now thriving and full of independent shops and the prettiest cafes and courtyards you will find in Krakow.

and the area is teeming with Jewish History.

My sister understands my obsession with Christmas decorations so she knew the perfect place to take me to in Kazimierz as all the decorations are made by locals with disabilities so all the money helps support them

and then our next stop was the Klubo Ksiegarnia bookshop (9 Berka Joselewicza Street).  Krakow has the most fabulous bookshops and the city is very intellectual so you won’t leave Krakow without buying a few books or in my sisters case just 25!

My sister wanted to refuel again at BagelMama which is a quirky little shop in Kazimierz and while they don’t offer gluten free bagels they do make a blooming mean chicken salad.

After strolling through Kazimierz it was now late evening and we were knackered and had sore feet.  We headed back to the Sheraton Hotel in Krakow for a shower and to have a non-alcoholic cocktail aptly named the Fluffy Kiwi!

The next morning we were up early as I wanted to visit Wawel Castle and the Castle has a timed entry system and only issues so many tickets per day so getting their early means you can get into the Castle in the morning and then head off exploring the rest of Krakow during the afternoon.

Meeting my sister back at the Sheraton we caught a taxi to Schindlers Museum which I can’t recommend enough; it’s probably Poland’s second best Museum after the Warsaw Rising Museum.  You must take the time to visit and you won’t find the Museum boring in any way as it’s well thought out and also very visually appealing in the way it’s designed.

It was still warm so an ice cream was on the cards so we went to the famous Lody ice cream shop in Kazimierz (Starowiślna 83, 31-038 Kraków) – the wait is well worth it for the Blueberry ice cream alone.  You will find it’s actually the locals waiting rather than tourists.  They only serve the ice cream in a cone so if you are gluten free you will need to grab a spoon and eat around the cone.

We had another stroll through Kazimierz as we just couldn’t get enough of this area of Krakow and stumbled upon a Spanish restaurant where we had a meal.  It was okay and they made me a gluten free fish dish which was good.

Catching the tram back to the Old Town we visited the markets for me to find myself a pair of Polish Slippers (couldn’t find a pair in my size, boo!) but I did pick up some fudge in the markets.

Lisa wanted to take me to her favourite bookshop in Europe, Massolit Books (Felicjanek 4, Kraków) which has it’s own little cafe attached.  You could honestly sit in this bookshop for hours and just relax.  The book selection is impressive and very well priced.

Lisa had purchased tickets for a TEMPERO concert and she knows we don’t have the same taste in music however I loved Klezmer music!  If you get a chance, make sure you go and listen to these guys perform.  Just so much soul!

Krakow is perfect for a city break weekend or even longer so you can visit the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial or the Wieliczka Salt Mines on the outskirts of the city.  Looking at these photos, I really fancy booking another flight back to Poland so you can safely say I highly recommend a visit to this beautiful city.  It truly feels like you have stepped back in time when you visit in Krakow; the city is elegant, intellectual and has an old world charm.
