The house was totally remodelled in the 1920’s after Lord Fairhaven and his brother bought the property sight unseen via an auction.  In his will they let their family use the property until their deaths and then it was to be passed over to the National Trust however his family weren’t allowed to make any changes to the property…this wish was ignored…

…unfortunately the family made some ghastly decorating choices and when the property was finally handed over to the National Trust they had to do a lot of restoration work.  The house is now a time capsule to the 1920’s which is exactly how Lord Fairhaven wished Dad and I to see the property on the day of our visit.

^^Obviously prudes never lived in this house…it was willy and dahlia central…I’m a worry wart and I do worry that one day my hand will accidentally knock off a willy from a statue and I’ll have to superglue it back on and then my hand would get stuck to the statue…just like it happens in the movies…to date, this hasn’t happened YET!

…have a guess who the artist is…famous for painting large naval scenes.

How Easy Is It To Grow Dahlias?

Pretty darn easy…basically you dig a hole in the ground and throw in a Dahlia Tuber, cover with soil, water occasionally and a few weeks later you should see your little baby growing taller by the day.

You can use pots as well but make sure they are quite heavy round pots as dahlias can get very top heavy when in flower and with a gust of wind…poof…they’re like a damsel in distress and just can’t get back up again.

Just water the dahlias occasionally, every day during really hot hot days but you can water them every 2-3 days and they will still flower.  Apparently Dahlias are native to Mexico and store water in their tubers in case of drought so it takes a bit to kill them.

If you live in a cold climate then after the first frost you need to lift the tubers up and store them in a sheltered spot i.e. garden shed or garage over winter and then replant after the last frost in Spring so around April time.  If you don’t have nipply cold winters then just keep them in the ground and they should survive the winter as long as it’s not to wet.

So you can find them everywhere…amazon has a good selection (eBay is also great for picking up seedlings during spring time!) or check out Sarah Raven (you can order now and delivery will be made in February) but remember you can only buy tubers at certain times of the year.

When my family where over visiting England, I wanted to show them a variety of different sites from the visiting the Potteries in Staffordshire, to National Trust properties, the natural beauty of England and dare I say it…a visit to Lakeland (the highlight for mum and Lisa!).  Our first National Trust Property was Little Moreton Hall in Cheshire and unfortunately we only had 30 minutes to whizz through the property but I’m determined to visit again one day for a proper snoop as it’s fabulous!

I will be honest and say that I fell out of love with the National Trust a few years back but with a car and making time to venture around the English countryside a lot more these days…there is truly some amazing National Trust properties that just need to be visited and Little Moreton Hall is one of them!

Travel Tips for visiting Little Moreton Hall, Cheshire

  • You can read more about the Little Moreton Hall on the National Trust website here.
  • Get there way before closing time so you can explore the interiors and the gardens…and enjoy a cuppa and a scone in the cafe.
  • Some of the volunteers are dressed up so make sure your hair is done for a photo or two…if allowed of course
  • I would highly recommend a National Trust membership or if you’re coming across on holiday to the UK then pick up the National Trust Touring Pass which is excellent value of money if you plan to visit a few properties – this is only for overseas visitors.
  • There is a car park and it’s short walk to the property through the gift shop.
  • The address for Little Moreton Hall is Congleton, Cheshire CW12 4SD – there is a slight bend to the road by the entrance so be careful when turning.

On our little road trip to Cornwall, G had the Eden Project on his bucket list.  I had visited many years ago with my folks and we’d enjoyed our day out…roll forward a few years and I received a big shock when I saw the price of entry now.  So is the Eden Project Worth the £27.50 Entrance Fee… hmmm let’s find out!

^^The iconic domes!

Travel Tips for the Eden Project are found at the bottom of this post.

We arrived early morning and desperate for a cup of tea and a piece of cake…sadly the cake is labelled as low in gluten which isn’t allowed in the labelling world and Mrs D has taken this up with the Eden Project in the past and it still hasn’t changed.  I decided to give it a go and the cake was lovely but it made me wonder how on earth it can be low in gluten rather than gluten free.  The price of two cakes and three drinks set up back over £15…ouch!

…it was fun to see how the gardens have all being designed and to get some inspiration for our own garden.

The Eden Project is an educational  garden which is trying to teach folks about biodiversity, fair-trade and how we all need to work together…no bees, no humans…basically we need to plant flowers to help out our bee population…we did this year and the amount of wildlife we had in the garden was incredible from bees, insects to birds.  If we all made one small change in our lifestyle just imagine how we could help Planet Earth…time to start thinking about our diets, fast fashion, travel and how we live on this planet.

We entered the humidity dome first, which is like a huge hot house but not as humid as I last remembered…if you like giant palm leaves then you’re going to love this dome…

G and I spent less than 2 hours at the Eden Project and to be fair, it wasn’t that busy and it was at the start of the school holidays when Cornwall was super busy.

Personally I feel like the Eden Project has really priced itself out of the market especially for families and overseas travellers…if I was travelling from NZ this would be costing a crap load of money and I would have felt short changed by the experience.

I was disappointed with the lack of events on for children who were visiting…it was the start of the school holidays and just felt like the Eden Project was missing a trick or ten…it’s one of those places, you visit once and don’t go back even though your ticket allows entry for a full year from the first date of entry. More activities especially around sustainable gardening would have us visiting again.

G and I had a discussion if we thought the Eden Project was worth the £27.50 entrance fee and the answer was NO!  The B&B owner also agreed and thought a fair price would be around the £15 mark which I think is more reasonable overall however if you can find a 2 for 1 voucher than I would recommend a visit.

We felt that The Eden Project could push so much more on showing how to live more sustainably with nature it just felt like it has given a half heartened try…we heard rumblings about financial pressures and redundancies so who knows if this has had an impact on the Eden Project overall.

I’m not saying don’t go…just that we were both disappointed with the cost (if we had paid full price!) vs what was on offer on the day of our visit.

Travel Tips for the Eden Project, Cornwall

  • Booking tickets online on the Eden Project website prior to your visit can save some money
  • If you’re into collecting avios, weirdly after our visit I noticed if you go through the British Airways Gateway 365 portal you can earn avois on the purchases and there were some good values offered (at the time of writing it was 7 avois per £1 spent).
  • I’m pretty frugal at the moment and found a really great way of saving money; the May Gardener’s World offered a discount card with 2 for 1 tickets to many gardens around the UK including the Eden Project; for us this made the entrance reasonably priced.  Unfortunately the magazine is completely sold out online now however check it out next May as you can also gain entry to Kew Gardens.
  • If you can find another way to gain a 2 for the price of 1 ticket then this is definitely more purse friendly.
  • If you are wanting to buy your meal inside, make sure you have all your credit cards handy as it’s blooming expensive; we saw a number of folks with packed lunches which is the way to go if you are watching your pennies or the eye watering ticket price has emptied your purse.
  • The shop inside the domes wasn’t too badly price however I thought the plants and accessorises were overall very expensive and thanks to smart phones you can do a quick search online to see if it’s cheaper elsewhere.
  • There is plenty of parking so don’t worry about getting to the site early and they offer a shuttle bus from the car park to the entrance
  • You can take photos wherever you fancy which is great!
  • Take flat comfortable shoes as the site is rather large and there are some stairs around so comfy shoes are a must!

After filling my tummy with a full English breakfast and a chat with the owner of the B&B about why so many Kiwis and Aussies are desperate to visit Port Isaac…apparently it’s a rite of passage for Southern Hemisphere tourists visiting Cornwall; we explained that Doc Martin is a rather popular TV show, probably more so in NZ than in England.

There are a couple of little shops selling beautiful homeware items if you fancy picking up a souvenir or two…I managed to talk G out of buying another coat (seriously how many coats does one boy need?!?  Apparently I have enough coats to fit out a family of four…I proved this when my family was over last week!)…

…and there are plenty of beautiful little cafe’s to grab a bite or two…including a gluten free pasty (unfortunately it had so much onion that I couldn’t eat it…I’m rather intolerant to onions and garlic, more so than gluten!)…how cute is the Krab Pot?!

THE RNLI also have a lifeboat station down by the harbour so G had a snoop inside…

…all the puffing is totally worth it, trust me!

Port Isaac totally floated my boat…much to the RNLI’s utter joy I’m sure…we visited early and maybe we were lucky that it wasn’t overrunning with tourists first thing.  There isn’t a huge amount of things to do in the village but it’s lovely to see a spot in Cornwall which is still holding onto it’s roots even though it’s become a tourist attraction thanks to Doc Martin.

Travel Tips for Port Isaac, Cornwall

  • There is a car park at the top of Port Isaac which has quite a few car spots available however am guessing this would full up quite quickly during peak season in Cornwall.  Make sure you have some coins with you, I can’t remember if the machine actually accepts cards as well.  The walk down the hill and back up is okay however sensible shoes are required!
  • I wouldn’t bother trying to take your car to the bottom of the village as it’s a rather tight squeeze and you’ll most likely shave your bikini line.
  • We were in Port Isaac for just over an hour and we managed to waddle around the whole village however we didn’t stop for a meal as we still had a belly full of English breakfast.
  • There are a few spots that offer gluten free options including the Krab Pot and Nicky B’s Pasty Shop which had some gluten free pasty options!
  • There are some lovely walks around the coast however all that fresh salty air made me want to take a lunch time nap!
  • You can buy a map with the locations used in the filming of the BBC Show, Doc Martin however they are pretty easy to spot when walking around.
  • The School is actually a hotel which you can book here if you fancy staying in the village.
  • If you’ve never watched Doc Martin then you can find the series on amazon, it’s truly wonderful…I’m old school and still buy dvd’s!
  • The RNLI offer a great service and are always looking for a bob or two…so if you have a spare penny or two lying around then why not donate to this worthy cause…G has being rescued in the past by the RNLI so we donate when we can…I’m not sure who is more of the disaster, G or me?!?!

On the first weekend my folks and little sister were over from New Zealand, we decided to head out for a picnic…the problem was choosing where to go?!?  I decided to round everyone up and head to Buckinghamshire to visit the National Trust property, Stowe Landscape Gardens.

I’d never visited so we all like to explore something together for the first time if we can…the girls headed down to Tesco to buy the necessary ingredients to pop in the picnic basket…G was forced into the loft to bring down the picnic baskets…loaded up, we were on our way to National Trust Stowe.

Stowe has attracted visitors since 1717 and 2017 is no different! Not having any idea what to expect, we had an oooh moment as we headed up the drive at Stowe……we parked up (it’s free parking for National Trust members)…decided to take the golf buggy rather than walk the necessary 10 minutes…yes our legs were painted on…

…why would you use your legs when someone invented a golf buggy to take you for a quick twirl to the best vantage point at Stowe.  It also gave us some time to take some family pics…golf buggy family photos are what every family photo album is missing these days.

The view was pretty impressive…I’m pretty sure you’d agree!  Do you remember when Elizabeth first sees beautiful Pemberely in the BBC adaptation of Pride & Prejudice…Stowe has a tendency of creating these special moments as you wander around the gardens…just when you least expect it…you find yourself admiring a wonderful gardening masterpiece.

This isn’t going to be a short post as you can probably already tell…it includes our family photos from the day…we like to have a giggle and enjoy ourselves and as my family and friends read this blog, this is an easy way to share our day with everyone…with almost 100 photos.  You may want to pull out your own bone china tea cup and fill her up and maybe make a sarnie or two…otherwise you could end up a bit parched from a crap load of scrolling!

It would be fair to say that Stowe isn’t a small property to walk around and something that I didn’t realise…there aren’t really any gardens with flowers…it’s more parklands which you can easily walk around but it’s rather large (like 10,000 steps large!).

Travel Tips for a Picnic at National Trust Stowe Landscape Gardens, Buckinghamshire

  • National Trust Stowe is located in Buckinghamshire, quite close to Milton Keynes and Buckingham.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes as the property is rather large
  • You can hire a golf buggy to make your way around National Trust Stowe which is something I would definitely do if we take G’s brother to the property due to his disabilities.
  • There is a cafe and shop at the entrance and another little kiosk right at Bell Gate however their are only two toilets…one at the entrance and by Stowe House itself.
  • There are a number of great picnic spots at Stowe but just be aware you will need to carry all your bits and bobs around with you like we did afterwards.
  • The car park is free for National Trust Members
  • Entrance to the property is £11.20 per adult / £12.40 with gift aid however it’s free if you’re a National Trust member.  If you’re a foreign national and plan to visit a few National Trust Properties over a week or so then I would highly recommend investing in a National Trust Touring Pass.
  • If you can’t make up your mind which British Heritage Pass to purchase then I’ve written a nifty little post for you.
  • Stowe House is managed by the Historic Houses Association so you will need to pay an additional fee to gain entry ontop of the above prices if you don’t hold a HHA card to snoop inside the house.
  • Take a raincoat with you as there isn’t much shelter offered around the grounds…I’ve just purchased this great little Barbour number in bright yellow (and it’s in the sale!)…it’s lightweight and the best bit is, it covers my bottom and I’m basically a giant!
  • Check out Amazon for some great deals on picnic baskets…remember a picnic is what you make of it…our family are big fans of picnics and we enjoy our time together as you can see from the photos.  If you want a posh picnic basket then check out Fortnum & Mason or if you’re happy with second hand then check out eBay.
  • The National Trust have a some really great picnic spots to enjoy…one of my favourites is Woolsthorpe Manor in Lincolnshire…watch out for the falling apples!
