On our little road trip to Cornwall, G had the Eden Project on his bucket list.  I had visited many years ago with my folks and we’d enjoyed our day out…roll forward a few years and I received a big shock when I saw the price of entry now.  So is the Eden Project Worth the £27.50 Entrance Fee… hmmm let’s find out!

^^The iconic domes!

Travel Tips for the Eden Project are found at the bottom of this post.

We arrived early morning and desperate for a cup of tea and a piece of cake…sadly the cake is labelled as low in gluten which isn’t allowed in the labelling world and Mrs D has taken this up with the Eden Project in the past and it still hasn’t changed.  I decided to give it a go and the cake was lovely but it made me wonder how on earth it can be low in gluten rather than gluten free.  The price of two cakes and three drinks set up back over £15…ouch!

…it was fun to see how the gardens have all being designed and to get some inspiration for our own garden.

The Eden Project is an educational  garden which is trying to teach folks about biodiversity, fair-trade and how we all need to work together…no bees, no humans…basically we need to plant flowers to help out our bee population…we did this year and the amount of wildlife we had in the garden was incredible from bees, insects to birds.  If we all made one small change in our lifestyle just imagine how we could help Planet Earth…time to start thinking about our diets, fast fashion, travel and how we live on this planet.

We entered the humidity dome first, which is like a huge hot house but not as humid as I last remembered…if you like giant palm leaves then you’re going to love this dome…

We left the humidity dome and wandered past all the restaurants, pondering if we were requiring more expensive and poorly labelled food in our bellies…the answer was no…so we hit the gift shop instead…I bought G some bamboo socks which apparently are better for your feet…he agrees.

I’m taking more of an interest in ethical fashion and where my clothes are coming from now more than even and it’s amazing to see more companies advising how they’re cutting down their water usage on materials etc. and the use of sustainable materials.

…I’ve backed into a prickly willy plant while having a wee out in the open in Libya…thankfully I only received a prickle in my foot and not my bottom!  I dine out on my disaster travel stories….they’re the best part of travelling.

The Australian garden was interesting but once again I felt it lacked a bit in imagination with the educational detailing and layout…the colours were beautiful though…I was expecting more from this new addition…just bring the crisps around as I’ve got the wine…wine, wine, wine (moving on from my wine)

I’ve made chutneys and also frozen a lot of our vegetables for use over winter…The Good Life, the Bedford version!  I grew heirloom tomatoes this year and the crop was amazing…go for the older variety plants for a change, not the modified seeds that you find these days…think purple carrots, yellow tomatoes, bobbly red tomatoes…embrace the old fashioned varieties and you will be surprised with your crop.

G and I spent less than 2 hours at the Eden Project and to be fair, it wasn’t that busy and it was at the start of the school holidays when Cornwall was super busy.

Personally I feel like the Eden Project has really priced itself out of the market especially for families and overseas travellers…if I was travelling from NZ this would be costing a crap load of money and I would have felt short changed by the experience.

I was disappointed with the lack of events on for children who were visiting…it was the start of the school holidays and just felt like the Eden Project was missing a trick or ten…it’s one of those places, you visit once and don’t go back even though your ticket allows entry for a full year from the first date of entry. More activities especially around sustainable gardening would have us visiting again.

G and I had a discussion if we thought the Eden Project was worth the £27.50 entrance fee and the answer was NO!  The B&B owner also agreed and thought a fair price would be around the £15 mark which I think is more reasonable overall however if you can find a 2 for 1 voucher than I would recommend a visit.

We felt that The Eden Project could push so much more on showing how to live more sustainably with nature it just felt like it has given a half heartened try…we heard rumblings about financial pressures and redundancies so who knows if this has had an impact on the Eden Project overall.

I’m not saying don’t go…just that we were both disappointed with the cost (if we had paid full price!) vs what was on offer on the day of our visit.

Travel Tips for the Eden Project, Cornwall

  • Booking tickets online on the Eden Project website prior to your visit can save some money
  • If you’re into collecting avios, weirdly after our visit I noticed if you go through the British Airways Gateway 365 portal you can earn avois on the purchases and there were some good values offered (at the time of writing it was 7 avois per £1 spent).
  • I’m pretty frugal at the moment and found a really great way of saving money; the May Gardener’s World offered a discount card with 2 for 1 tickets to many gardens around the UK including the Eden Project; for us this made the entrance reasonably priced.  Unfortunately the magazine is completely sold out online now however check it out next May as you can also gain entry to Kew Gardens.
  • If you can find another way to gain a 2 for the price of 1 ticket then this is definitely more purse friendly.
  • If you are wanting to buy your meal inside, make sure you have all your credit cards handy as it’s blooming expensive; we saw a number of folks with packed lunches which is the way to go if you are watching your pennies or the eye watering ticket price has emptied your purse.
  • The shop inside the domes wasn’t too badly price however I thought the plants and accessorises were overall very expensive and thanks to smart phones you can do a quick search online to see if it’s cheaper elsewhere.
  • There is plenty of parking so don’t worry about getting to the site early and they offer a shuttle bus from the car park to the entrance
  • You can take photos wherever you fancy which is great!
  • Take flat comfortable shoes as the site is rather large and there are some stairs around so comfy shoes are a must!

After filling my tummy with a full English breakfast and a chat with the owner of the B&B about why so many Kiwis and Aussies are desperate to visit Port Isaac…apparently it’s a rite of passage for Southern Hemisphere tourists visiting Cornwall; we explained that Doc Martin is a rather popular TV show, probably more so in NZ than in England.

…if you look hard enough when visiting Port Isaac you will see some grooves in the buildings from the old lifeboat.

If you walk past the Doc’s house and keep walking, you are provided with some truly beautiful views over Port Isaac…

…all the puffing is totally worth it, trust me!

Port Isaac totally floated my boat…much to the RNLI’s utter joy I’m sure…we visited early and maybe we were lucky that it wasn’t overrunning with tourists first thing.  There isn’t a huge amount of things to do in the village but it’s lovely to see a spot in Cornwall which is still holding onto it’s roots even though it’s become a tourist attraction thanks to Doc Martin.

Travel Tips for Port Isaac, Cornwall

  • There is a car park at the top of Port Isaac which has quite a few car spots available however am guessing this would full up quite quickly during peak season in Cornwall.  Make sure you have some coins with you, I can’t remember if the machine actually accepts cards as well.  The walk down the hill and back up is okay however sensible shoes are required!
  • I wouldn’t bother trying to take your car to the bottom of the village as it’s a rather tight squeeze and you’ll most likely shave your bikini line.
  • We were in Port Isaac for just over an hour and we managed to waddle around the whole village however we didn’t stop for a meal as we still had a belly full of English breakfast.
  • There are a few spots that offer gluten free options including the Krab Pot and Nicky B’s Pasty Shop which had some gluten free pasty options!
  • There are some lovely walks around the coast however all that fresh salty air made me want to take a lunch time nap!
  • You can buy a map with the locations used in the filming of the BBC Show, Doc Martin however they are pretty easy to spot when walking around.
  • The School is actually a hotel which you can book here if you fancy staying in the village.
  • If you’ve never watched Doc Martin then you can find the series on amazon, it’s truly wonderful…I’m old school and still buy dvd’s!
  • The RNLI offer a great service and are always looking for a bob or two…so if you have a spare penny or two lying around then why not donate to this worthy cause…G has being rescued in the past by the RNLI so we donate when we can…I’m not sure who is more of the disaster, G or me?!?!

I’ll let you into a little secret, I’ve never watched Poldark but I’m thinking it might be about time with autumn just around the corner.  On our jolly little road trip around Cornwall I decided it would be a good idea to pootle around a certain area of Cornwall rather than try and “do” all of Cornwall in a few days and not enjoy the experience.  Travel shouldn’t be just about ticking off all the world’s must dos but enjoying the experience and visiting places of interest to you.  A visit to Charlestown was high on my wish list as I actually really like Maritime history…Greenwich was one of the first places I visited when I moved to London.

I'm a lover of Maritime History so a visit to Charlestown was a must to see the Tall Ships in the little Port and lets not forget the cute cottages. I’ve worked in the shipping industry for quite a few years (however I work in a completely different field at the moment which is more air based…and no I don’t work for a travel company even though I’m based close to Luton) so I find ports really interesting so I added Charlestown to my Cornwall bucket list which included Port Isaac and the Eden Project.

We had initially tried to visit Charlestown on the Sunday however it was heaving due to the regatta…it’s not a quiet spot to visit when the regatta is on (trust me!) but we visited the following day and I was so pleased we did as I loved this gorgeous little spot in Cornwall.

…G and a number of other folks are were all watching the RNLI attempt a rescue of two teenagers that got stuck on the rocks as the tide came in which was a bit of excitement on our visit to Charlestown.

I also found a little fudge shop that had pre-packaged gluten free options of cakes at the top end of Charlestown so I stocked up on some fudge for G and I…I may have eaten most of it without sharing…have you ever enjoyed selfish flavoured fudge before…if not, it’s the best…I’m blaming the hormones again.

Feeling a tad peckish we went to find some food and stopped off at Wreckers and sat outside….G ended up eating his dinner wrapped up in a blanket and a lovely New Zealand born lady told me she hoped he felt better soon.  I laughed this off and told her he wasn’t sick, just a big English wimp and couldn’t deal with some cooler temperatures…she laughed and said she understood that problem well.

^^The English Wimp!

^^To prove we both visited Charlestown…I’m super wonderful at this selfie business…totally know my best angles and G loves to smile…NOT!  If you want to know how to get that wonderful soft focus photo…place your finger accidentally over the camera and hey presto…rub camera with breton top to take sharper photos.

G and I left as the sun was setting and bathing Charlestown is a blanket of gold…

…golden hour is one of my favourite times to be holding a camera…anyone else agree?

Would I recommend a visit to Charlestown…most definitely, it is rather beautiful little spot with a few great shops, nice restaurants and a gorgeous beach and I’m so glad that we visited as it didn’t feel touristy or tacky…it was actually a rather relaxing little spot and made me think, Cornwall is rather pretty but you need to visit spots that interest you and not follow the hordes.

Travel Tips For Your Visit to Charlestown, Cornwall

  • There is a small car park however you can park on the road for free and walk in which only takes a few moments
  • There are a few shops at the top end of Charlestown which includes a really good antique shop and a few galleries if you are that way inclined.  I’m saving up my pennies to buy a piece from this art gallery…I love bright colours…one day!
  • Wreckers offers a great selection of gluten free options which are clearly marked out on the menu which makes life A LOAD easier and they also have blankets available if you decide to sit outside.
  • Charlestown offers a week long regatta during July so if you want to avoid it then check the dates…we ended up visiting during the regatta and there was live music served with cups of tea (how very English!) which was right up our alley.
  • If you are a Poldark fan then there is an exhibition / tourist attraction you can visit at the Charlestown Shipwreck & Heritage Centre…I didn’t as it was closed.
  • The beach looks absolutely stunning and would be a perfect picnic spot…it was the first beach in England where I thought I wouldn’t mind popping in for a little doggie paddle.
  • If you have never watched Poldark then here is a link to the series on Amazon so you can.

Last month, G and I took a jolly little road trip around Cornwall…there were only two places that were set in stone that we wanted to visit and the rest of the time it was just wherever we fancied and a few naps in-between as we were on holiday after all and napping is compulsory…the salty air works wonders for insomnia, trust me.

So without further ado here is what we managed to visit during our road trip around Cornwall…drum roll please…

Eden Project

This was sitting on G’s bucket list for ages, apparently he saw a TV documentary on the Eden Project a number of years ago and wanted to visit.  After checking out the visitor information I worked out that entrance was £27.50 per person so I found a cheap way of visiting…my frugal tendencies are showing and I’m not sorry (find out how to do the same in the travel tip section below…I’m going to make you scroll baby, right to the end).

The Eden Project is a great place to visit to learn more about the environment, plants and how we all need to work together to live on this planet….I’ve really taken to gardening this year and have made sure that most of our plants feed the local bees as without bees we can’t exist…get rid of those succulents and start planting flowers folks!

I’m in total two minds about the Eden Project and will do a post later on due to the reasons why…but it’s amazing to see the changes from my first visit to the Eden Project so many moons ago.

Port Isaac

I’m a big fan of Doc Martin…strangely G is very similar to the Doc in personality and mannerisms, his Mum and even G agrees with this statement…his matter of fact nature does make me laugh and roll my eyes.

Visiting Port Isaac was on my bucket list and it didn’t disappoint; you will need to walk down and back up a rather large hill to get into the fishing village but it’s totally worth it.  I loved this little fishing village as it’s not as touristy as I imagined it was going to be and it wasn’t overcrowded which was a right old blessing on the day we visited.  You can read more about Port Isaac here…and there are a load more photos to enjoy as well!

Charlestown

I’ve never watched Poldark however Charlestown is used in filming due to its small historic port so it’s becoming a hot little tourist destination in Cornwall…plus it’s rather cute hence why we visited.

The village is rather small however it’s a tad bit more touristy that Port Isaac with a few restaurants, an antique shop and little galleries to enjoy a spot of shopping here and there.

G sat down and watched the RNLI rescue two teenagers that managed to get stuck on the rocks during high tide while I photographed the tall ship and colourful houses…that’s how we roll in our house.  You can read more about Charlestown here…plus there are plenty more photos to scroll through!

Mevagissey

Now this was high on my list and we ventured to Mevagissey on the Sunday which was our first big mistake…second was visiting this part of the world during the British school holidays…we drove through the town and stopped further around the coast for a drink by the seaside. Hopefully we will venture back as it looked like a lovely spot to visit and I was actually looking at staying here but thankfully I booked a much quieter location.

Travel Tips for Road Trip Around Cornwall

  • When choosing where you want to visit, make sure you check out the route that is on offer as you don’t want to take tiny country roads especially if you’re a nervous driving…some of the country lanes around Cornwall are pretty hairy for the most experienced of drivers.
  • A little car is better than a huge beast of a vehicle as the roads through some villages are pretty narrow…and for parking!
  • Cornwall is a rather large county so focus on a particular area and explore that area in detail rather than spending ages sitting inside of your car.
  • We stayed at a great little B&B and the owners were super lovely and it was in a very convenient location for our travels…Cornwall is all about great hospitality so make sure you try and support local business folks while in the area.  Check out www.booking.com for all your accommodation needs in Cornwall…there is something for everyone’s budget or taste.
  • If you want to keep your accommodation costs down then I would avoid travelling through July and August as it’s school holiday time here in the UK so prices sky rocket.
  • There are a number of National Trust and Historic Houses to check out in Cornwall…why not check out this post on Which British Heritage Pass you should buy for you and your family.
  • If you are looking for a load of tips on Cornwall then I would suggest checking out Anna’a blog;  Anna’s Cornwall Directory post is a great starting point and she will point you in the direction of some right old gems.
  •  Gluten free in Cornwall is easy peasy; I had no problems anywhere which makes travelling gluten free stress free…I even found a gluten free Cornish Pasty in Port Isaac (well it was a Pasty Pie however I couldn’t eat it as it was laden with onions…onions and I aren’t friends).  Just google “Gluten Free Cornwall” and there are bajillion recommendations for you to try.
  • You can book your tickets in advance to get a cheaper entrance price into the Eden Project however if you buy the May Gardeners’ World magazine you will be able to gain 2 for 1 entry saving you a massive £27.50 at the Eden Project alone!  The magazine is only £5.99 and there a number of discounts on offer for gardens around the UK…Kew Gardens is also included in the 2 for 1 offer however not during in July and August.
  • If you fancy reading some more posts about Cornwall on this blog then why not check out my visit to Charlestown.
