My Dad and I are HUUUUUGE fans of Dahlias so when I saw in my Autumn National Trust newsletter about the Dahlia Festival at Anglesey Abbey in Cambridgeshire I knew we had to go for a little drive to our neighbouring county to see the rainbow of dahlias!

We left the girls at home to pack the bags *coughs they only had 100 kilos of luggage to pack!* and pottered over to Cambridgeshire; obtaining some tickets we went in search for the dahlias which were dotted around as flower crowns on certain folks…

The house was totally remodelled in the 1920’s after Lord Fairhaven and his brother bought the property sight unseen via an auction.  In his will they let their family use the property until their deaths and then it was to be passed over to the National Trust however his family weren’t allowed to make any changes to the property…this wish was ignored…

…unfortunately the family made some ghastly decorating choices and when the property was finally handed over to the National Trust they had to do a lot of restoration work.  The house is now a time capsule to the 1920’s which is exactly how Lord Fairhaven wished Dad and I to see the property on the day of our visit.

…have a guess who the artist is…famous for painting large naval scenes.

How Easy Is It To Grow Dahlias?

Pretty darn easy…basically you dig a hole in the ground and throw in a Dahlia Tuber, cover with soil, water occasionally and a few weeks later you should see your little baby growing taller by the day.

You can use pots as well but make sure they are quite heavy round pots as dahlias can get very top heavy when in flower and with a gust of wind…poof…they’re like a damsel in distress and just can’t get back up again.

Just water the dahlias occasionally, every day during really hot hot days but you can water them every 2-3 days and they will still flower.  Apparently Dahlias are native to Mexico and store water in their tubers in case of drought so it takes a bit to kill them.

If you live in a cold climate then after the first frost you need to lift the tubers up and store them in a sheltered spot i.e. garden shed or garage over winter and then replant after the last frost in Spring so around April time.  If you don’t have nipply cold winters then just keep them in the ground and they should survive the winter as long as it’s not to wet.

Where Do You Buy Dahlias From?

So you can find them everywhere…amazon has a good selection (eBay is also great for picking up seedlings during spring time!) or check out Sarah Raven (you can order now and delivery will be made in February) but remember you can only buy tubers at certain times of the year.

Last month, G and I took a jolly little road trip around Cornwall…there were only two places that were set in stone that we wanted to visit and the rest of the time it was just wherever we fancied and a few naps in-between as we were on holiday after all and napping is compulsory…the salty air works wonders for insomnia, trust me.

So without further ado here is what we managed to visit during our road trip around Cornwall…drum roll please…

Eden Project

This was sitting on G’s bucket list for ages, apparently he saw a TV documentary on the Eden Project a number of years ago and wanted to visit.  After checking out the visitor information I worked out that entrance was £27.50 per person so I found a cheap way of visiting…my frugal tendencies are showing and I’m not sorry (find out how to do the same in the travel tip section below…I’m going to make you scroll baby, right to the end).

The Eden Project is a great place to visit to learn more about the environment, plants and how we all need to work together to live on this planet….I’ve really taken to gardening this year and have made sure that most of our plants feed the local bees as without bees we can’t exist…get rid of those succulents and start planting flowers folks!

I’m in total two minds about the Eden Project and will do a post later on due to the reasons why…but it’s amazing to see the changes from my first visit to the Eden Project so many moons ago.

Port Isaac

I’m a big fan of Doc Martin…strangely G is very similar to the Doc in personality and mannerisms, his Mum and even G agrees with this statement…his matter of fact nature does make me laugh and roll my eyes.

Visiting Port Isaac was on my bucket list and it didn’t disappoint; you will need to walk down and back up a rather large hill to get into the fishing village but it’s totally worth it.  I loved this little fishing village as it’s not as touristy as I imagined it was going to be and it wasn’t overcrowded which was a right old blessing on the day we visited.  You can read more about Port Isaac here…and there are a load more photos to enjoy as well!

Charlestown

I’ve never watched Poldark however Charlestown is used in filming due to its small historic port so it’s becoming a hot little tourist destination in Cornwall…plus it’s rather cute hence why we visited.

The village is rather small however it’s a tad bit more touristy that Port Isaac with a few restaurants, an antique shop and little galleries to enjoy a spot of shopping here and there.

G sat down and watched the RNLI rescue two teenagers that managed to get stuck on the rocks during high tide while I photographed the tall ship and colourful houses…that’s how we roll in our house.  You can read more about Charlestown here…plus there are plenty more photos to scroll through!

Mevagissey

Now this was high on my list and we ventured to Mevagissey on the Sunday which was our first big mistake…second was visiting this part of the world during the British school holidays…we drove through the town and stopped further around the coast for a drink by the seaside. Hopefully we will venture back as it looked like a lovely spot to visit and I was actually looking at staying here but thankfully I booked a much quieter location.

Travel Tips for Road Trip Around Cornwall

  • When choosing where you want to visit, make sure you check out the route that is on offer as you don’t want to take tiny country roads especially if you’re a nervous driving…some of the country lanes around Cornwall are pretty hairy for the most experienced of drivers.
  • A little car is better than a huge beast of a vehicle as the roads through some villages are pretty narrow…and for parking!
  • Cornwall is a rather large county so focus on a particular area and explore that area in detail rather than spending ages sitting inside of your car.
  • We stayed at a great little B&B and the owners were super lovely and it was in a very convenient location for our travels…Cornwall is all about great hospitality so make sure you try and support local business folks while in the area.  Check out www.booking.com for all your accommodation needs in Cornwall…there is something for everyone’s budget or taste.
  • If you want to keep your accommodation costs down then I would avoid travelling through July and August as it’s school holiday time here in the UK so prices sky rocket.
  • There are a number of National Trust and Historic Houses to check out in Cornwall…why not check out this post on Which British Heritage Pass you should buy for you and your family.

  • You can book your tickets in advance to get a cheaper entrance price into the Eden Project however if you buy the May Gardeners’ World magazine you will be able to gain 2 for 1 entry saving you a massive £27.50 at the Eden Project alone!  The magazine is only £5.99 and there a number of discounts on offer for gardens around the UK…Kew Gardens is also included in the 2 for 1 offer however not during in July and August.

I’ve really become a little homebody lately and dare I say it but I’m enjoying playing around in my garden.  Sometimes you need a little inspiration and with so many beautiful British Gardens to explore, I decided a little road trip to Coton Manor Gardens in Northamptonshire was in order after seeing photos of their gorgeous gardens on Facebook.

I love a good old classic English Garden to ramble through and the gardens at Coton Manor didn’t disappoint…as soon as I entered the gardens I was hit with the beautiful fragrance of roses and jasmine lingering in the air, a heady mix!  A group of 4 little old ladies were right behind me and they were very vocal about their delight of all the beautiful scents…they made me smile whenever I bumped into them during the day.

The gardens are a photographers dream especially during the summer months with all the rambling roses…

To get to the manor you need to walk past fields of sheep…well it is the Cotswolds isn’t it!  Thankfully it was a rather warm day so of the sheep were sitting under a tree keeping cool or scoffing grass…rather than getting frisky and trying to scare a certain Kiwi.

….get enough of them; to the point that I may have become slightly obsessed!

Sometimes the greatest pleasure in life is just taking time to sniff the lavender.  We all rush around in this world and I personally feel that we don’t take the time to really enjoy people’s company properly anymore (this is where quality and quantity go hand in hand…I would never double book myself or jam in three catch ups in one day…I want to savour my time with a loved one), we don’t really appreciate our gorgeous surroundings or just simply take the time to relax as we suffer from the “fear of missing out” syndrome…I’m happy to miss out on things now if it means that I get to spend quality time with the people that I love….time is something that you will never get back!

Travel Tips for Snowshill Manor and Gardens

  • Snowshill Manor and Gardens is a National Trust property so it’s free entry if you’re a member otherwise it’s £10.40 per adult – you can read more here about joining up.  Post Code – WR12 7JU
  • There is a bit of a walk to the manor house however they do offer a buggy for those with less mobility, you will still need to walk through the orchard and gardens to get to the manor.
  • It’s a lovely spot for a picnic…something that I’ve found out recently is that National Trust properties rock especially Woolsthorpe Manor in Lincolnshire.
  • Cotswold Lavender is close by the Snowshill Manor, entry is payable in cash and there is a cafe on site…it is now closed for the summer but check out their opening times on the website.
  • A perfect day trip would be to combine the above two activities with a visit to Broadway…it would make a lovely day trip in the Cotwolds
  • Snowshill featured in the first Bridget Jones’s Diary movie…the church scene…I didn’t get a photo…bugger but I did see it as I drove around slightly lost.
  • You will need to have a car to visit Snowshill Manor and Cotswold Lavender however there are so many lovely walks in the area.
  • All the photos were taken on my Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II

On the Bank Holiday Weekend I jumped into the Smurf Mobile to visit the pretty Bluebells at Ashridge Estate in Hertfordshire.  Getting there was easier said than done due to the Irish Lady sitting inside my Sat Nav and I having a disagreement over what way I should go (I really should think about updating the maps from 2008 to 2015!) but I got there in the end and it was so worth it…

Let’s be honest you can’t start any bluebell hunt without a Mint Magnum right?  You need to build up your strength as you’re about to take approximately 3,435,443,433 photos of little flowers so you can spam everyone on Instagram (only 3 made it onto my feed); you got off lightly!

The view over the pretty little villages in Hertfordshire…

Armed with instructions on where to find the Bluebells from the National Trust Information centre at Ashridge Estate, I got a tad lost…I’m not good with following instructions or maps!  But I found them eventually, phew!

Are you ready to be spammed with photos of Bluebells?!

Spring, my favourite season…the bluebells are one of the many reasons why I love spring

One last photo, I’ve been kind and haven’t spammed you too much!

Ok I’ve lied, now it’s the last one!  Promise!

I decided it was a pretty darn good time to get my new floral Superga kicks acquainted with their Bluebell cousins…they were weary of each other…the floral superga’s had a very heavy foot inside that could squish bluebells without a moments notice, eek!

Visiting-the-Bluebells-at-Ashridge-Estate-Hertfordshire

Ashridge Estate is managed by The National Trust however it’s doesn’t charge to see the Bluebells and there are a variety of different length paths to visit.  Take cash with you so you can raid the Mr Whippy van (i.e. the ice cream van) for ice creams before you head off on the great Bluebell Hunt.

Where is your favourite place in the UK to hunt out Bluebells?  The National Trust have this great Bluebell page on where to find Bluebells all across the UK.

On a serious note, the Spanish Bluebell Armada could potentially wipe out the English Bluebell in years to come as folks are purchasing “English” bluebell bulbs which are infact the Spanish variety.  The Telegraph has an article on the Spanish Bluebell Armada which you should check out.

Disclaimer: No bluebells were squished in the making of this blog post!
