Travel Tips for 48 Hours in Salzburg, Austria

  • A taxi from the airport should cost you no more than 15 euros
  • The Old Town is a pedestrian only zone so if you have booked a hotel in this area then you will find that they may not be able to take you right up to the door if you arrive via taxi
  • We stayed at the Crowne Plaza Salzburg The Pitter as we had a few IHG points to use up; I’m trying to be rather frugal at the moment.  The rooms are lovely however we didn’t have the best check in experience…it was so bad that G actually complained.  The hotel no longer sits under the IHG Brand and is now part of the Imlauer Hotel Group.
  • Make sure you take comfortable shoes with plenty of grip especially if it is due to snow.  I wrote a post on what to wear to the Christmas Markets however this is what I would advise if visiting any European city during the winter months.
  • A donation is requested for entry into the Salzburg Cathedral (Dom) – address is Domplatz, Salzburg 5010, Austria
  • The Salzburg Fortress (Festung Hohensalzburg) costs a staggering 15.50 euros per person and includes the funicular ride to the top.  We didn’t think it was worth the money as it was lacking in directions, information and just plain old things to look at that you would expect for the price! Address is Moenchsberg 34, Salzburg 5020, Austria
  • To visit Schloss Hellbrunn and the Sound of Music Gazebo, catch the Number 25 bus from the Old Town…you can buy tickets on the bus or from a newsagent prior to boarding.  Address is  Fürstenweg 37, 5020 Salzburg, Austria
  • Hotel Sacher in Salzburg is probably Salzburg’s most luxurious hotel and located right across from the Old Town.  The tea room is famous for it’s Sacher Torte, unfortunately they don’t make a gluten free option but it’s a nice place to stop for a hot drink and a piece of cake if you’re enjoying 48 hours in Salzburg.
  • The Heart of Joy Cafe is open from 8am – 7.00pm / 8.30pm most days offering a great variety of gluten free and vegan food…I would recommend this cafe to anyone visiting the city.  The address is Franz-Josef-Straße 3, 5020 Salzburg, Austria and is located a short walk from the Mirabell Palace and Gardens.
  • Remember to take a spare battery or two for your phone and camera, the battery life is rather pants to say the least as they lose charge quicker in cold weather!

I love a lot of things…castles, cakes, shoes and don’t forget the Christmas Markets!  Over the years I’ve visited quite a few markets around Europe including Germany, France and now Austria so I thought I would create a little Christmas Market Guide to Salzburg and the surrounding villages after my recent visit.

Salzburg Old Town

The big draw in Salzburg is the Christmas Market in the Old Town around Dom Square…the market is spread out however it has a lovely flow to the market so you’ll be able to browse every market stall with ease and there is a great mixture between food and decorations.

I was a bit disappointed not to see that many Nut Crackers or Smokers like you do in Christmas Markets in Germany (and yes I know this is Austria but had made a little assumption in my mind which was obviously wrong)...I did spot a few here and there however they weren’t that expensive which made me think they weren’t made locally.  If you want to buy traditional Christmas Decorations then pick up the item to see if you can spot a sticker or ask the shop keeper if they were made in Europe.

Travel Tip:  Use your feet…most of the old town is a pedestrian area only and you will stumble upon numerous Christmas Shops and the Advent Markets which are dotted around the city…make sure you wander down all the little alleyways as you will find plenty of cosy cafes and little pop up shops selling Christmas decorations.

Gluten Free Tips: Head over across the bridge to Hotel Sacher for a piece of gluten free cake…on the day we visited they had two options.  If you follow a vegan diet there are plenty of options dotted around the Salzburg Christmas market.

As I said above you really need to pop down the little alleyways along

Mirabell Palace and Gardens

There is a small Advent Market just beside the Mirabell Palace and Gardens (on the main road close by the Congress building); this is mainly a locals Advent Market and it’s where they pick up their gorgeous wreaths, chug back a few mulled wines and whatever is cooking…our concierge at the Crowne Plaza said that they offered the best Mulled Wine in Salzburg at the Mirabell Gardens Christmas Market.

Austria Travel Inspiration - A Christmas Market Guide to Salzburg and Surrounding villages. Pop over to the blog to see Salzburg during winter, all dressed up in it's festive finest along with my travel and gluten free tips!

Schloss Hellbrunn

Now while the Palace isn’t open for a sticky beak, there is a rather beautiful Christmas Market in the grounds…you can visit the markets and tick off visiting the glass gazebo from the Sound of Music all in one go.

I loved the surroundings of this markets…and I felt rather festive after visiting Schloss Hellbrunn…Schloss means Palace just so you know.  Personally I thought the quality and selection of goods were a lot better here than the main Christmas Market in Dom Square …and price wise it was cheaper than the main market.

Austria Travel Inspiration - A Christmas Market Guide to Salzburg and Surrounding villages. Pop over to the blog to see Salzburg during winter, all dressed up in it's festive finest along with my travel and gluten free tips!

Visit the Old Town market first then head to Schloss Hellbrunn…best way is to compare prices however if you see something at Schloss Hellbrunn then buy it when you see it as it’s a little way out of town.

Travel Tip: catch the Number 25 bus…buy tickets on the bus (2.60 euros each way…or it could be 2.80…my brain is pants) or they are cheaper again if you buy from a newsagent prior to boarding…buses run every 20 minutes during week days and the journey takes approximately 20 minutes .  The bus will show the stop on a tv screen so you will know when you’re approaching Schloss Hellbrunn.

Gluten Free Tip: I did spot one or two gluten free snacks…chocolate covered fruit and a slice.

Department Stores

I usually love to look at department stores especially if they are old school department stores as they normally stock lovely Christmas decorations however Salzburg didn’t seem to have any…or the concierge and I were not on the same wave length (more than likely…Lidl kept coming up when I was trying to describe I wanted more of a Liberty style department store than a Lidl supermarket!)…but I did find a couple of shops that may be of interest for you.

Depot Salzburg – Linzer Gasse 17-19

Depot had some rather cheap Christmas decorations upstairs…depending on your favourite colour scheme etc…I bought a couple of things including some funky ribbons.  The quality isn’t great so you definitely get what you are paying for here…choose wisely.

Gehmacher Salzburg – Alter Markt 2

Now I love love love this interiors and clothing shop…I could basically move in and I held myself back from buying a few things that I really really needed like a Reindeer Coat hook…he looked a bit evil holding his gun but my goodness I fancied the socks off him.  I did buy some of the most gorgeous large red glass baubles from this store…at 7 euros a pop they were pretty damn expensive however the quality was exquisite and I’ve never seen them anywhere else.  I tried to buy quality glass ornaments when I’m travelling as they become your family Christmas heirlooms.

Salzburg is a really compact city; you will stumble across every market if you’re visiting for a weekend…you will need to catch the bus or grab a taxi to Schloss Hellbrunn as it’s not walkable.

A Christmas Market Guide to Salzburg’s Surrounding Villages

We (the royal we…G drove!) rented a car and drove down a section of Austria’s Romantic Road which is rather pretty…I didn’t have too much of a fixed plan bar one little town in particular which didn’t turn out to be the one I really loved the most.

St Gilgen Advent Market

This was a last minute stop that I added onto our itinerary as we were leaving the airport car park with the rental car and oh my goodness, it was my favourite…it resembled something out of a little fairytale.

Austria Travel Inspiration - A Christmas Market Guide to Salzburg and Surrounding villages. Pop over to the blog to see Salzburg during winter, all dressed up in it's festive finest along with my travel and gluten free tips!

The village has designed these large candles made out of fibreglass and had them made in Austria…they are dotted all around the town, on street lamps and in window boxes and you can buy them from a few of the little stores dotted around the town…I loved them so much that I bought two to take home with me.

Just need G to make me some shutters and window boxes now…G called me high maintenance…as if <coughs> I’m totally high maintenance but can get ready for a black tie event in less than 10 minutes!

While there were a number of stores selling hats and socks, there were a number of cute stores selling Christmas decorations that were truly wonderful and which we hadn’t spotted in Salzburg (stalls can start to become repetitive…the same hats and socks etc).

Travel Tip: we had a hire car and there are a few car parks…park up on the main road and walk down, it’s totally worth a wander through St Gilgen.

Gluten Free Tip: We stumbled upon a little cake shop, Cafe Eissalon Dallmann (Mozartplatz 2a 5340, St Gilgen, Austria)…well I wanted a hot chocolate as I had lost feeling in my finger tips and a large meringue with cream jumped straight into my mouth…don’t you hate it when things like that happen when on holiday!

St Wolfgang Advent Market

Now this was the place that I really wanted to visit as their Christmas Market is known as the best Advent Market in Austria and St Wolfgang is known as the most romantic spot in all of Austria…if you’re a foodie you will love this market a lot…there are a lot and I mean a lot of food stores compared to Christmas decorations.

The star attraction are the buildings of course which are beautifully painted however I found the market to be a bit hit and miss…maybe I had hit one to many Christmas markets…who knows.

Travel Tips: Park the car and walk to the length of the Christmas Market…you can enjoy a boat trip which runs between three villages on Lake Wolfgangsee or a festive trip on the Cog Railway for views over St Wolfgang (we were going to do this however temperatures had plummeted…try -11 degrees hence my chestnuts were frozen solid!)

Gluten Free Tips: I didn’t spot anything in the markets themselves and we were full from our previous stop but there are many eating establishments here.

Hallstatt Advent Market

We hit Hallstatt really early on a Saturday morning; we were warned to arrive prior to 10am as it gets packed…it’s insta-famous you see.  Now we were told that the market was open for 10am however we didn’t see much life to it; I think we were a bit too early.

Austria Travel Inspiration - A Christmas Market Guide to Salzburg and Surrounding villages. Pop over to the blog to see Salzburg during winter, all dressed up in it's festive finest along with my travel and gluten free tips!

It’s very pretty under a blanket of snow and there are a few shops selling festive decorations…just be wary that it is very touristy with signs on houses asking you not to take photos of their house…sad but very true.

Travel Tip – Parking around Hallstatt is a bit of a nightmare, you basically need to park in one of the outer village car parks and they run shuttle buses into the village…get there early to avoid the crowds however this may impact on how many stores are actually open

Berchtesgaden Christmas Market

We crossed the border and headed to the Christmas Market in Berchtesgaden; it’s a area of natural beauty and favoured by walkers during the warmer months.  Berchtesgaden has a Christmas Market which is rather small to be honest…the stalls were very similar to what was on offer in Salzburg and the surrounding towns and villages.

Germany Travel Inspiration - A Christmas Market Guide to Salzburg and Surrounding villages. Pop over to the blog to see Salzburg during winter, all dressed up in it's festive finest along with my travel and gluten free tips!

They do have some fantastic wooden displays in Berchtesgaden though which caught my eye and there is a lovely florist selling Christmas decorations…I left some reindeer behind in Germany…honestly reading personal finance books have curbed my spending a lot!

Travel Tip – there is an underground car park right by the Christmas Market…highly recommend staying at the Kempinski Berchtesgaden for the views and spa alone…while we didn’t stay on this visit we have stayed at this property when it was under the Intercontinental branding and loved it…they offer a spa day pass which is good value for money as it’s a bit pricey to stay now.

Let me know if this Christmas Market Guide to Salzburg has helped you out…and if you do visit and have any further tips why not drop them down in the comments box below for others to read…sharing is caring folks!

Travel Tips for Salzburg, Austria

  • The Old Town is almost a total pedestrian zone so make sure you have comfortable shoes; the city is small and very walkable
  • During the winter months, a number of the attractions are closed so if you are offered the Salzburg Visitors card be wary of what is actually open and if you’re going to get value out of the card…it does offer free transportation.
  • Most of the stall holders only accept cash so make sure you are carrying euros; you will find atm machines in most markets
  • We hired a rental car from the airport for a few days to visit some of the outlying villages and towns – this was as a good idea for us as it meant we had flexibility on to where we visited plus it was cheaper as there were three of us rather than booking tours
  • Viator is offering a Christmas Market tour to some of the villages close to Salzburg if you don’t fancy driving.
  • A taxi costs no more than 15 euros from the airport to the Salzburg Old Town area
  • Check out my packing tips on what to wear to the Christmas Markets in Europe…I’ve visited a few so I now know a few tricks not to freeze by bottom off
  • If you’re visiting a number of Christmas Markets across Europe then make sure you check out my handy travel tip post for the Christmas Markets.

I’ve become a bit of a veteran to visiting these beautiful things that we call the European Christmas markets, so I decided that I should do a little write up on what to wear to the Christmas markets as I don’t want you to make the same mistakes that I once did!  After many trips I can safely say there are a few tricks to keep nice and toasty rather than freezing your reindeer balls off!

Grab a Down Jacket

Last year, prior to our trip to Peru I purchased this Rab Microlight Alpine Down Jacket as I was going to do a trek to the Rainbow Mountains and I needed something that was light but also would keep me snug as a bug in a rug!  I’ve now worn this jacket to Moscow and also to the Salzburg Christmas Markets and I can say with my hand on my heart that I didn’t get a chill once – buy a quality made down jacket that covers your kidneys and peachy bottom and you won’t have a problem.  The reason why I purchased Rab was due to the fact that they have a good reputation for quality and how they source their down (you can find out more on their website)…not all companies do this however Rab and Berghaus do…let’s all try to buy items that are a bit more ethically sourced if we can.

How good is this Rab jacket…my mum wanted to pinch it and fly home to New Zealand with it…I nabbed it off her just as she was about to take off on her broomstick (one day I will post photos of mum on her broomstick to the blog so we can have a giggle)!

^^me modelling all my what to wear to the christmas market tips in one photo.

Layer your Clothes

Make sure you layer your clothing; it’s better to be too hot than too cold especially when you’re far far far away from your hotel and requiring a hot bath to warm up!  For layers I always look at buying Merino Wool clothing as it’s good at keeping you warm or cool depending on the temperature.  Two New Zealand brands that I love are IceBreaker and MacPac…I actually prefer MacPac due to my height; if you’re tall like me then you understand that finding tops that are long enough can be a problem…I have a rather long torso…I find MacPac are better at this than Ice Breaker.

I bought a few Rab tops recently and I used them as part of my layering technique when I was in Austria and they were fantastic.  Really digging Rab, can you tell.

Make sure you buy Wool

I know some people are allergic to wool however wool has changed so much over the past few years…merino wool is amazing and doesn’t scratch if you have sensitive skin which I do have.  When packing your bags make sure your clothes have an element of wool in them…as this is what is going to keep you warm.  I get really annoyed with the ladies in the office that wear jumpers without an element of wool in them and complain that it’s to cold…it’s worth the money to buy something that will keep you warm at the Christmas markets.

Christmas Market Travel Inspiration - What to Wear to the Christmas Markets in Europe and how to avoid frost bite! Click the blog post for all my tips on how to stay warm and enjoy your next vacation.

^^I’m guessing she is regretting not buying more wool clothing!

Love a Hoody

Now I understand why hoodies love hoodies…they keep your bloody warm!  I purchased this Rab hoody and it worked better for me than a scarf and beanie as it keeps your neck really warm as there isn’t any skin exposed.

Boot Love

I bought some Sorel winter boots and I can say these giant thumpers were amazing…I normally can get away with wearing a thicker pair of socks (mum sends me icebreaker socks which are amazing and don’t slip down!) and chuck on my Russell & Bromley Chelsea Boots (great for wide feet as well!)….Chelsea Boots or any style boots are great looking however if they don’t have a grip then you are going to go home with more than a few nut crackers…boys might head home with having their nuts cracked through a lovely connection with the concrete.

The Sorel boots are amazing if you’re looking for grip and warmth…grip is the most important word…you can tuck your jeans into them and they don’t look too terrible to be fair.

Christmas Market Travel Inspiration - What to Wear to the Christmas Markets in Europe and how to avoid frost bite! Click the blog post for all my tips on how to stay warm and enjoy your next vacation.

Jeans

I live in jeans when I’m travelling as they are versatile however in cold climates they aren’t the warmest of clothing to be wearing…the way to get around this is to buy some leggings or tights to go underneath them…just a thin pair however if you feel the cold then I would suggest investing in a good quality pair of sexy Long Johns…check out Rab or Icebreaker

Accessories

While I loved my hoodie, I still used my beanie, scarf and fingerless gloves a few times…I take too many photos to deal with taking my hands in and out of gloves!  Make sure you pack some socks that have a wool element…honestly anything with wool will keep you warm…do I sound like a nagging old nana yet…stay away from acrylic and nylon as these wont keep you warm at all.

Christmas Market Travel Inspiration - What to Wear to the Christmas Markets in Europe and how to avoid frost bite! Click the blog post for all my tips on how to stay warm and enjoy your next vacation.

Raincoat

I took my Barbour raincoat as when it rains it can really put a dampener on things…and you don’t want to have to be watching where you stick your umbrella when you could be looking at all the pretty Christmas decorations.  It’s not the most stylish but it does what it says on the tin and it keeps me covered almost down to my knees…you can buy here or here.

Luggage

When visiting the Christmas markets, my key is not to over pack and focus only on packing items that I know I will be wearing…you will need that extra space in your bags for christmas decorations.

This is my faithful packing list of what to wear to the Christmas Markets…my motto: the more quality wool products the better!

After doing an afternoon tea staycation post earlier this week, I thought I needed to do a post on some destinations a little bit further afield so let me introduce you to some alternative city breaks in Europe to take in the coming months.

Marseille, France

France’s second largest city; once deemed a city to avoid,  it’s now one of France’s best kept secrets.  It’s such a delightful city to visit and the pastel colour streets and beautiful architecture will make you fall in love with Marseille.  You can read my City Break to Marseille post by clicking right here and my second visit to Marseille right here.

alternative-city-breaks-in-europe

Luxembourg City, Luxembourg

A great little destination for a quickie break if you are struggling with time and a great place to take the kids if you are travelling with them the first time. Luxembourg City is compact, doesn’t have all the hordes of tourists seen in the more popular city break destinations, green and ever so child friendly.  You can read my City Break to Luxembourg post by clicking right here.

alternative-city-breaks-in-europe

Porto, Portugal

The city of Porto has been on my wish list for a number of years and after reading Elle’s posts on the destination last year here and here I was desperate to visit.  You can read my city guide to Porto here.

alternative-city-breaks-in-europe

Krakow, Poland

This Polish city has so much to offer that I would suggest extending it from a quick weekend break to spending at least 4 nights in the city to visit all the incredible sights the city has to offer. A day trip to the Salt Mines and Auschwitz is a must.  You can read my City Break to Krakow post by clicking right here.

alternative-city-breaks-in-europe

Athens, Greece

I’m not sure why Athens isn’t a more popular city break destination; it has so much to offer. From incredible historic sights, amazing museums, fabulous shoe shopping and don’t even get me started on the food. The flying time is just under four hours however don’t let this put you off as the extra time spent on the plane is so worth it!  You can read my City Break to Athens post by clicking right here.

alternative-city-breaks-in-europe

Verona, Italy

The city of love; is this Europe’s most romantic city? Shakespeare set Romeo and Juliet in fair Verona and the city makes a perfect city break destination as it’s small and compact. If you’re visiting during summer than try and get tickets to the Opera that is played in the Arena (Roman Amphitheatre).  You can read my City Break to Verona post by clicking right here.

alternative-city-breaks-in-europe

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

I’m adding Amsterdam to my alternative city break list as the city is shedding it’s dirty drug / sex image and becoming a luxury city break hot spot. If you’re an art lover, this city is the perfect destination for a quickie city break (excuse the pun).  You can read my City Break to Amsterdam post by clicking right here.

alternative-city-breaks-in-europe

Dusseldorf, Germany

Most city breakers head to Berlin and Munich if wishing to visit Germany however I’m going to suggest Dusseldorf. The city offers incredible shopping however if you are keen on heading to the Christmas Markets, fly into Dusseldorf, visit the markets there and then jump on the train for the short journey to visit the bigger Christmas Market in Cologne.  You can read my City Break to Dusseldorf post by clicking right here.

alternative-city-breaks-in-europe

Vienna, Austria

If you eat a lot of cake and base your holidays around this requirement then let me recommend a visit to Vienna; the home to so much cake that you will possibly need to buy two seats on the return flight back home! The city is just stunning and I would return in an instant as I found three nights wasn’t enough to enjoy this delightful city break destination.  You can read my City Break to Vienna post by clicking right here or my Gluttons Guide to Eating Cake in Vienna post.

alternative-city-breaks-in-europe

Split, Croatia

Don’t overlook this beautiful Adriatic city; the city has so much to offer and there is nothing more beautiful than sitting in Diocletians Palace on a balmy summers evening having dinner. The city is so much cheaper to travel to than Dubrovnik and I would high recommend trying to rent an apartment in the Old Town to really enjoy your stay.  You can read my Split vs Dubrovnik post by clicking right here.

Vienna, the birth place of Marie Antoinette; the lady of that very famous quote – “let them eat cake”, so you can’t visit and not overindulge in the sweet pleasure of gluten free cake in Vienna.

My first stop on my cake tour was The Intercontinental Hotel in Vienna where in the Club Lounge the following cakes were served up.

One the left was my gluten free cake inspired by the Lebkuchen biscuit filled with jam and it was so good that I had a piece in my handbag for the flight home! The gluten loaded cake on the right is filled with very yummy rhubarb.  The perfect cake to have with a nice cup of tea.

Cafe Vienna situated on the ground floor of the Intercontinental Hotel offered the yummiest chocolate mousse cake; one word – YUM!  I’m happy to have this piece of gluten free goodness spending a lifetime on my hips.

On our visit to the Schönbrunn Palace we stopped off at the Cafe on site to have a cup of tea and some cake after burning off some calories walking around the gardens (possibly not enough for the cakes we ordered though!)

It was lovely to sit outside in the Autumn weather (bar the pesky birds that kept visiting our table and I’m afraid of birds!).  My gluten free chocolate cake is the one on the top and G’s cake is the fruit cheesecake.

Our next cake stop was Demel for a take out piece of gluten free cake before we rushed off for a night at the Opera.

There was two gluten free options (left photo) with almond tiers with an option of either a butter cream or chocolate cream filling.  If you are eating gluten there are so many yummy looking cakes; I think my hand prints can still be found on the glass case!

After meeting the patisserie chef at The Ritz Carlton who kindly pointed out all his gorgeous gluten free option cakes, I decided to try the carrot cake and oh my goodness it was amazing!  On the day we visited there were four gluten free cake options!

On Sunday morning before leaving Vienna I realised that I had yet to purchase my fridge magnet; so I sent G off to the spa at the hotel and went out to find the best fridge magnet a girl could find.  After a traumatic shopping experience to find that perfect tacky magnet a slice of cake was required.  A secret trip to Gerstner was just what the doctor ordered, hello my last piece of gluten free goodness!
