Why We’ve Cancelled Our Peru Trip

Last night G and I made a decision to cancel our Peru trip.  Peru was one of our bucket list destinations however for us, family comes first.

A few weeks ago, G’s dad got ill in Morocco…everyone thought it was a case of an upset belly however he’s not got any better.

Last Thursday he was admitted to hospital with what they thought was a viral infection so they ran some tests.

Here’s my snarky NHS comment – apparently doctors don’t work bank holidays so they can’t provide you with results until the following Tuesday…a hospital ward is not a happy place to be in on a Tuesday after a bank holiday…there’s a back log of unhappy news!

Yesterday we found out for certain that it wasn’t an infection but the Big C.

We decided to cancel Peru as travelling isn’t the end all or be all of everything…regardless of what travel bloggers tell you.

I don’t want G to have any regrets hence it doesn’t matter to me if we tick Machu Picchu off our bucket list this year or never – I’m a firm believer that things happen for a reason in life and it’s just not our time to visit.

Luckily we’ve got travel insurance through my HSBC bank account and they were wonderful this morning; I totally know where I stand with them which is fantastic and I’ve got a case worker assigned to me for the whole claim.

As I’ve said before…don’t plan a trip or go travelling unless you can afford travel insurance as you never know when you will need it!

Oh no, I’m so sorry to hear about G’s dad. Family always comes first, and Peru’s not going anywhere. My thoughts are with you and the family, here for gelato trips whenever you need it :)

I’m so sorry to read this, what terrible news about G’s dad. Life is way too short for regrets. On a practical level, pleased to hear your travel insurer is being responsive. Sending very best wishes. x

So sorry to hear this Kelly :( I think you’ve made the right decision, I’m sure G wants to be with his family at this time and you can always plan another trip later, Peru isn’t going anywhere. Glad your insurance has been great about it as well.

I’m so sorry to hear your sad news! Machu Picchu has been around for hundreds of years, I’m sure it’ll hang around a bit longer for your visit. For now I hope you get to spend some quality time with your family x

Really sorry to read this, I hope the NHS pull their finger out and he gets the treatments quickly. Definitely the right thing to do and even just the odd weekend trip here and there will be the down time G will need, close to home xx

I’m so sorry to hear your FIL’s cancer. That is terrible news. I will be thinking about you guys.

We have never booked a trip with travel insurance simply because most of our trips are so inexpensive, I haven’t found it necessary, but this is a good reminder that if we ever do decide to spend more on a trip than usual, we should prob insure it.
