Dear Instagram, I Think You’ve Lost Your MOJO!

Yes, I think Instagram has lost it’s Mojo!  For me, Instagram has always been my social media crack…pretty pictures, wanderlust inspiration and I find you connect more with the person behind the app but recently I have just found Instagram frustrating and I’ve started to fall out of love with it so I thought I would share my reasons…

Reason 1 / Algorithm Changes

Seriously since the big changes all I’m seeing is porridge with trendy berries, chunky socks and rumpled bedsheets at dinner time and pizza for breakfast…it’s all pretty crap and why do people share rumpled sheets, it’s just all a tad gross!  And the worst of it is, I no longer get to see everyones photos…instagram chooses what I want to see and it’s just got ridiculous…little miss or mr popular with 7,000 likes pops up in my feed however close family and friends photos don’t pop up at all…I suppose I could turn on notifications…or instagram could just change their bloody algorithm.

Dear Instagram, I Think You've Lost Your MOJO!

^^What I think of the folks at instagram after the Algorithm change!

Reason 2 / Follow & Unfollow Business

I wrote a big post on the Follow / Unfollow business a while ago as I wanted to see if it really did help to grow a community and if it was worth it overall…yes it boosted my numbers and I found that I got a lot more interaction with the new algorithm changes however once I stopped using it my numbers have plummeted!  I get followed a lot on Thursday through to Sunday and then unfollowed from Monday to Wednesday….I love checking out the accounts following me and roll my eyes when I see their numbers as I know what will happen in 3-5 days.  My socialblade account is interesting reading from the past few weeks…take a look (I did have a clear out of accounts that were almost mirror images of each other as well so you can see that in my unfollowed column – the third column is my new followers or unfollowers)!

Dear Instagram, I Think You've Lost Your MOJO!

I can see why people are doing this…it’s not just building numbers now, it’s actually helping to get your photo in front of more eyes which is what people want especially if you are working with a brand.  Instagram you seriously screwed things up with that algorithm change!

Reason 3 / Instagram copy cats

Ahhh…great photographers have sucummbed to what they think their followers actually want and are no longer posting the great photography that made me fall in love with them in the first place….I get it…I truly do.  But I do have to ask the question…if one big instagrammer decided to jump off a tall building, would you fucking do the same?!?! No…be yourself…we all have different strengths and weaknesses…what works for one and has made them extremely successful on the platform is great but do we all need to follow that success story…nope…create your own!  You can read my instagram cliche post here which details a few of the more cringeworthy copy cat moments.

Dear Instagram, I Think You've Lost Your MOJO!

Reason 5 / What has happened to the great photography

I saw one of my favourite instagrammers recently say that he was falling out of love with instagram for a variety of reasons but mainly as he’s no longer seeing the interaction due to the changes plus great photography isn’t winning anymore and was thinking of taking a break…strangely, I’ve visited places that he’s featured on his instagram profile as his photography IS THAT GOOD.  He’s got a big following however I have to agree with him…there is a lot of piss poor photos on instagram and I’m shocked at the number of likes they’re getting especially when truly fabulous photographers don’t seem to be getting recognised…Instagram is now too tit and arse Kardashian like for me!

I love a good scroll through the likers of these photos to see the quality of them…it makes me laugh…it really does…food for thought there folks…scroll through.

Reason 6 / Accounts aren’t what they seem

I sit here and cringe…I see some rather big accounts and I know how they got big…I’ve watched them follow and unfollow for over a year when they thought nobody could spot their bots working…I know who they are and I think you would be shocked and I do wonder if the people that have gained part of their following via these accounts actually know…ahhh instagram is a dirty dirty world.

Dear Instagram, I Think You've Lost Your MOJO!

All in all, I just think Instagram has lost it’s Mojo completely….they need to do something about this whole bot business as it’s just got out of hand completely.

A few months ago, I started up a second instagram account which is locked and that I share a number of photos, mainly of my double chins with my close family and friends.  It’s my little instagram safety net…where I can see photos of the people that are the most important to me rather than letting instagram choose which ones that I should see.

I hate Facebook and unfortunately I can see Instagram going down this ugly route…it’s why I decided to get involved with instagram…it wasn’t Facebook…something that I think they’ve forgotten!

So if you have a bored 12 year old at home on the next set of school holidays…can you please get them to make a new app similar to instagram where you can’t use bots and all photos are in chronological order.

Anyway that is my little instagram ranty moment…off for some more feta!

100% agree with all of this… I used to love Instagram so much but I hate how competitive it is now and this follow/unfollow business is so annoying. Sadly I think it has been going downhill since they were bought out by Facebook, and all the things that frustrate me about Facebook are now starting to appear on Instagram as well (completely random timeline, irritating adverts, etc etc).

I totally agree Stacey…they really don’t realise that folks that use instagram don’t like Facebook hence the reason why you’re on one vs the other but yes it’s becoming very Facebook like which is a shame…we just need to find a 12 year old to make us a new app! xx

    • November 25, 2016 / 6:51 AM

It’s just getting ridiculous…the games are horrendous…I can see why everyone is using a bot as you can’t grow on instagram now without using one! So sad to see what has become of this great photography app x

  2. November 25, 2016 / 12:51 AM

I couldn’t agree more – Instagram was always my favourite social media platform. I loved the creativity, interacting with people who had the same lust for travel and photography and found the whole process enjoyable. Now it’s just bloody hard work and I’ve given up on it a bit. Such a shame…

    • November 25, 2016 / 6:50 AM

Suzanne…ditto! It’s hard work to grow on this platform now…I’m waiting for the next photography app to come out as there is bound to be one shortly xx

  3. November 25, 2016 / 7:14 AM

This made me lol. I know what you mean on samey photos but christ you are an instagram wizard, I literally don’t have a clue re half the things you’re talking about and didn’t even know that the algorithim thing meant I’m not seeing certain people’s photos anymore. How do you even see your follow/unfollow data, and how does this get people followers?! #badblogger. Love AP

Haha I like that term Andrea :-) hehe! Yes all the bloody changes since Facebook have come in and trashed the app however the follow / unfollow data is crazy…I’ve linked to the page of my previous post on how you can spot them easily xx

  4. November 27, 2016 / 7:58 AM

Instagram has always been my least favorite form of social media for all of these reasons, especially since the updates. I completely agree!

    • December 19, 2016 / 6:37 PM

Since the updates it’s got so bad, I normally love instagram the most however lately it’s just plain crazy and everything is samey samey! xx

  5. December 6, 2016 / 3:36 PM

The first thing I used to do in the morning was scroll through my Instagram feed, but I’m lucky if I even get on it every day now. The algorithm thing KILLS me, but I genuinely don’t think they care and will go back to consecutive timelines. the thing that makes me the most mad, is that I can scroll through, to the last photo I remember seeing the day before, but next time I get on a photo will turn up that is from 23 hours ago! Why the ducking duck didn’t it turn up on my last scroll through sesh? Ruined.

I agree Dannielle, they have ruined a perfectly good app! We need to find a bored 12 year old to create a new app for us all that fixes all these Facebook / instagram issues xx

  6. December 14, 2016 / 1:12 PM

Oh, I do hope that they do something with the bots. Follow-unfollow business it’s just….man…I don’t even have words. Ugly, shallow…just…NO. I was totally oblivious to it as well for ageees.
But…I still like instagram…I think great photography is still just need to find it.

    • December 14, 2016 / 10:09 PM

I know what you mean…to be fair I haven’t really engaged lately on instagram much but I’ve seen no growth on my account since stopping the bot. Exactly, it’s finding the great photography that is also unique – unfortunately many accounts have blurred into the same one now! xx

This is a great post and I agree with you all the way. I left Facebook over a year ago and haven’t missed it one bit. It is nothing more than a big gossip app where anyone can say anything and everyone believes it. Now I am battling Instagram emotions. I used to love the app but now it is frustrating and seems so disingenuous. At the same time, it does drive traffic to my blog. At the end of the day when I realize the rat race I am participating in, I don’t really care about my numbers on Instagram or my blog or any other social media. My blog is not my livelihood, it is just my happy place which,I am most happy at when there alone. :-) Crazy introvert that I am. So, do I drop Instagram? There are some really good friends and original galleries that I love to support but not nearly as many as there are strange people who have no interest in my gallery. I took a break for a couple of weeks this month from it to see how I felt and to be honest, I didn’t miss it much. But I did miss a handful of really lovely people.

    • December 29, 2016 / 3:51 PM

Hi Cheryl, I’ve just started back on Facebook due to peer pressure from my folk so I just update my blog Facebook page and then unfollowed almost everyone on my personal account that I never talked too. I am battling the instagram emotions with you – I think Facebook have truly wrecked this app along with all the follow / unfollow business.
Congratulations on getting traffic from instagram to your blog – i’ve always struggled with that and just used it to post photos.
Like you my blog is just my little hobby and I stepped away from twitter and also took a break from instagram for a week recently and I still survived and so did my blog stats. I have decided to keep instagram however I am very careful on who I follow and use it as a micro blog when I don’t feel like blogging. As you said, there are a number of really great companies that need our support and friends who post lovely photos and that’s why I started on instagram and to show my love of places that I visited while living abroad.
I’ve stopped worrying about numbers and just focussing on enjoying life…we’ve had an interesting chats at work recently over why the younger generation are obsessed with numbers and it’s starting to filter up into the older generations as well.
Looking forward to seeing what 2017 brings, the good, the bad and the ugly I’m guessing with social media.

  8. December 29, 2016 / 5:37 PM

I used to watch who followed & unfollowed me but I got pretty bored pretty quickly. I stopped checking my crowdfire app which I just deleted actually. As for the copycat photos YAAAAAWN I couldn’t agree more. The one that annoys me the most at the moment is the 40+ fashion bloggers all wearing Bella Freuds 1970 jumper. Copying an outfit is kinda missing the point of being a fashion blogger isn’t it? Hahahahaha
    Truly enjoyed this post

    • December 29, 2016 / 6:08 PM

Instagram has got so boring, everyone sees something working and then decides to copy them! Fashion blogging must be so hard, if you see my last instagram post you will see that I am not a fashion blogger in the slightest! It’s really hard to find unique and creative people to follow on platforms now as they all start morphing into one! And thank you for your sweet comment! xx

interesting read, thanks for sharing. So much of what you said I can relate to except the facebook hate, I do still love FB

    • January 8, 2017 / 1:34 PM

Thanks Linda…we are all different, I’m glad you still enjoy Facebook x
