When we were looking for accommodation in Moscow, we decided to stick with a brand that we knew well and booked ourselves in the Intercontinental Moscow…so I thought I would do a little review of the hotel so you can see what to expect from your stay.

Location

The Intercontinental Moscow is probably best described as a business hotel and is located a good 10 minute walk away from Red Square.  To be fair, we preferred this as we were able to move around Moscow via an uber taxi with ease as we weren’t staying around the bottleneck area of Red Square where the traffic doesn’t move with any speed.  There are a few metro lines nearby so I don’t think you will be disappointed with the location and a number of local restaurants.

Pre-Arrival

I had made contact with the hotel about receiving an invitation letter so we could apply for our visa in London.  I made a booking (refundable in case we were rejected) and within hours I had my invitation letter for our visa.  It was super easy…just send an email with your booking number and the passport details of the people on the booking.  Check out my handy tips for travelling to Russia including a great website to help you fill out your Russian visa application form.

Check In

After what can only be described as a long journey from the airport…hello sitting in the back of a car for over 2.5 hours, we finally arrived and I was grumpy (5’11 in the back of a car isn’t fun!).  I had booked ourselves into a room with Club Lounge access as everyone goes on about how expensive Moscow is so I booked the lounge to cut our food costs while in the city…truly it’s not that expensive, maybe years ago but I thought it was cheaper than London!

^very swish lobby and smells gorgeous!

The check in was a breeze, all passports must be presented so they can register you as a guest.  That’s the easy bit!

Unfortunately the check in got a bit heated as my club lounge access was removed without my permission and we were upgraded to a suite (more about this later).  This wasn’t handled very well by the individual checking us in so in the end G asked to speak to the Duty Manager…surprise surprise that was who was checking us in.  I ended up leaving the check in desk as I was losing my cool as I felt like we were getting right royally ripped off and G handled the rest of the process.

In the end we were provided with the Club Lounge Access and the room upgrade.  I was over the hotel at this point and we hadn’t even got to the room!

Ambassador Upgrades & Club Lounge Access

Each Intercontinental hotel offers it’s loyal customers different upgrades; there is no consistency so it can make choosing the room that you want for your stay a minefield especially when staying at the Intercontinental Moscow.

I’m a Spire Ambassador (all through my credit card / loyal customer spending habits – no blogger bollocks here folks!) so I have certain expectations of what I will and won’t receive during our stay just like any other paying guest staying at this property.

I booked a King Club Room for two persons and was upgraded to the Moscow King Suite HOWEVER in this upgrade I lost my Club Lounge access which I had paid for and this frustrated the hell out of me…basically I would now need to pay for breakfast, lunch and dinner!

Now if you’re a regular Intercontinental Guest you will understand that if you get upgraded to a Club Room you rarely ever get free access to the lounge (it’s very rare indeed!) however at the Intercontinental Moscow you do – so at the time of our booking, if you booked a night in the Superior Room; you were then upgraded to the King Club Room which included Lounge access.

Now that Club Lounge access is only for one person; you have to pay for the second guest as well.  Confused, yes so was I as the Ambassador program does state that a “single room rate for double occupancy”; my interpretation of this would be that it would include club lounge access for both people staying in the room – it doesn’t…why it is for only one person per room is beyond me as most Club Rooms gives access to 2 people.

The Intercontinental Moscow doesn’t have many categories in the hotel so it makes it difficult to provide upgrades so don’t go looking for a suite as you are unlikely to get one.  If you book a Club Room then you should have the choice of a room upgrade to the Moscow King Suite possibly or you can have free entry to the club lounge for the second person.

^^The Ambassador gift included fresh fruit (actually good quality fruit as it can be quite manky at a few properties), unlimited water and a ceramic bear.

Room

We stayed in the lovely Moscow King Suite which was a lovely space for our 4 nights at the hotel…with a spacious lounge area including desk…

…a bedroom with power points right by the bed and the ability to turn off all the lights in the whole suite from your bed (trust me this was a high point…have you ever stumbled around a room trying to turn off every lamp that the night service team have turned on to provide the perfect amount of mood lighting…I normally stub my toe at this point on a large piece of furniture)…

…honestly the best power shower I’ve had in a hotel for a long time and we both used that bath as the mean streets of Moscow really do hurt your legs…and it came with a little duckie!

Club Lounge

G and I (or my family) have stayed at a number of Intercontinental properties over the years (I will name them all for you – Intercontinental Cairo Semiramis, Willard in Washington DC, Mark Hopkins in San Fransisco, The Venetian Las Vegas, The Palazzo Las Vegas, Intercontinental Lisbon, Intercontinental Porto, Intercontinetal Anthenaeum Athens, Intercontinental Vienna, Intercontinental Malta, Intercontinental Park Lane London, Intercontinental Marseille Hotel Dieu, Intercontinental Amstel Amsterdam, Intercontinental Warsaw, Intercontinental Berlin, Intercontinental Frankfurt, Intercontinental Dusseldorf, Intercontinental Hong Kong…and a few more than are no longer Intercontinental properties…so I know this brand well…the links are my hotel reviews)…and I can safely say with my hand on my heart that this is one of the best lounges we’ve seen at an Intercontinental hotel in a long time.

The food was overall fantastic and that was including the gluten free items; the breakfast was a fabulous buffet and then you could order a number of other items from the menu if you felt there was still a gap that needed filling…I was a huge fan of milky rice porridge for breakfast.

G had explained that I was gluten free and they were super helpful (a reason why we don’t stray often from the IHG brand as their gluten free knowledge is outstanding!)...I was told what I could and couldn’t eat.

^^I could eat all this!

The club lounge offers a full breakfast, soups for lunch and a rather delicious dinner with drinks.  I would happily pay for club lounge access at this property again…if you’re pondering about it, my advice would be to do it especially if you have a food intolerance.

Polina and her team were fantastic; on our last day in Moscow, we received a phone call telling us that we needed to leave the hotel earlier than planned for the airport as the traffic was really bad…thankfully we made it just in time for our flight.

Facilities

If you are after a hotel with a pool then the Intercontinental Moscow isn’t going to be for you as they don’t have one unfortunately however they do have a sauna to use and G used this a few times and said it was great.

Concierge Services

We used the Concierge service a few times in reception and they were always helpful which is what you’re looking for as a guest on holiday.  As we had Club Lounge access, we gained a lot of information via Polina and her team.

Overall Experience

While the check in left a bit to be desired and the confusion over the upgrade situation for Spire Ambassadors or just Ambassadors in general at the Moscow property…the hotel is really lovely, the staff friendly and the food…well there were no complaints from me on the gluten free front!

Personally, I feel that the Intercontinental brand has dropped it’s standards at a few properties recently so it’s lovely to see an Intercontinental property bucking the trend.

You can stay at the Intercontinental Moscow starting from 45,000 points…booking directly through the IHG.com website guarantees you the best rate however if you find it cheaper elsewhere then IHG will give you the first night free…it’s worth spending 5 minutes having a quick look as I’ve stayed for free before!

After spending two nights exploring Santorini, we had no fixed plans once we headed back to Athens so it was decided that we would go and visit G’s friend who lives close to the sleepy port town of Katakolo in the Peloponnese.

Greece Travel Inspiration - a visit to the sleepy port town of Katakolo in the Peloponnese, a perfect place to stop for the night when visiting Olympia which is nearby. If you need a hotel recommendation then I have the perfect answer on the blog and it has amazing views over Katakolo.

This meant arriving into Athens with no rental car and no hotel bookings…the rental car issue was easily sorted at Athens airport and we were on our way to Katakolo where we managed to watch a spectacular sunset from the car as we were departing Athens…crap happens!

G is the most disorganised traveller I know and our trips normally have G calling the bank to cancel all his cards then only to find them 15 minutes later…so we were going to see his friend whom he hasn’t talked to in a few years, his friend doesn’t do social media or phones much you see…boys!

The road to Katakolo from Athens had much improved since our last visit however it almost bankrupted us due to all the tolls…thankfully we had enough euros on us!  We were  pretty close to Katakolo when we thought…hmmm…it might be time to find a hotel for the night so thankfully with my Three Mobile Feel at Home package (I love this package so much!), I used my free 3G to locate us a hotel…Orizones in Katakolo.  G asked why I decided on this hotel…I told him I picked the most expensive one…it was 60 euros so it wasn’t too bad and it looked extremely clean and tidy.

On arrival at the hotel, we were greeted very very warmly…the staff at this hotel were so kind…and they knew G’s friend (N) or as I like to call him, G’s Greek twin brother and contacted him on our behalf…so after the shock that we were in Greece and in his neck of the woods (Greece is a pretty big country!), we went to bed and saw N the following day.

G and I had a little look around Katakolo, it’s changed a lot since G first visited many many years ago…the town is used by cruise ships to visit Olympia (we visited many years ago so I have no photos from this trip, sorry!).  As it was November, out of season for cruise ships, most of the shops were closed (apparently they open if there is a cruise ship in!)...we just wandered along so I could take a few photos here and there…

We had a really enjoyable two nights staying in Katakolo and visiting N and his family and we will definitely be back…those direct flights to Kalamata with British Airways are perfect for us!

I thought I would share some photos of Orizontes View Hotel…it was great value, family run and they were so friendly to us during our whole stay.

Travel Tips for Katakolo

  • We stayed at Orizontes View Hotel overlooking Katakolo which was a fantastic base and I would highly recommend and happily stay again.  If you’re visiting on a cruise ship and don’t want to visit Olympia then take the walk up the hill and have a quick bite to eat at this hotel and enjoy the views.
  • Katakolo is only a short drive from Olympia
  • There were only a few little restaurants open on our visit, it was November and there was no cruise ship in but we had a lovely meal in the town on our first night.
  • If you plan to hire a car from Athens and drive to the Peloponnese area then make sure you have sufficient cash with you, our tolls were close to 20 euros each way!!

The accountant in me hates paying stupid money so when we had a change of plans and decided to head to Greece instead of China, I thought it was the perfect time to cross Santorini off my bucket list especially as it was off season.  I found a rather reasonable hotel at £100 per night in Oia which was perfect for sunset spotting and a hot tub!

Let me take you for a little snoop around Lovers House which is part of the Oia Collection; a variety of different apartments aka cave houses dotted around Oia offering magnificent views and comfortable lodgings.

We had organised a transfer with the manager direct from the airport which is the easiest and cheapest way of getting from Thira airport to Airport (25 euros for up to 3 person) and was met my Elvis whom politely carried my rather heavy suitcase through the streets of Oia.

I had opted for Lovers House as it had a hot tub; somewhere for G and I to relax…some down time after the year we’ve had.

…and I’m sure the folks staying in Oia would agree that G had no issue sleeping with his snoring action. We did find it slightly weird that the duvet inner wasn’t inside a cover…my mind went to a weird place with that one but there was a top sheet…Europe is really really weird when it comes to it’s bedding action.

…it’s not the biggest of spaces considering the size of the living area however toiletries were provided which I wasn’t really expecting.  Okay the black toilet did freak me out…I’ve never seen a black toilet before and they are just sooooo weird…we had a pink toilet in Arundel…that also freaked me out.

Anyone else out there get scared of coloured toilets??

There was a self catering kitchen which included a SMEG fridge, oven, hob, microwave and coffee machine which came in very handy…as we were visiting during off season in Santorini, a number of the restaurants were closed so we came to a decision to visit the local supermarket and make a few of our own meals and eat outside which also saved us a few pennies and meant I could have feta for breakfast.

…okay I was expecting a lot more but you know beggars can’t be choosers and it was still pretty!

As I said earlier, the best part of this apartment is the terrace area which is rather private so you could happily sunbathe away while the streets are filled with folks waiting for the sunset and exploring Oia below…

Accommodation in Oia, Santorini does vary depending on which season you visit – Lovers House was available for £100 per night in November but it’s cheaper again in December…however it’s available for over £400 per night in August!

Travel Tips for Oia Collection, Santorini

  • We stayed at Lovers House which was perfect for two persons and included the best spot to watch the sunset that Santorini is famous for
  • Wifi was a good speed and included in the price
  • Breakfast is an additional cost however we walked to the other end of Oia and found the local supermarket and bought ourselves some treats (easier when you’re gluten free!)
  • There are a number of stairs to enter this property however there are two gates if you are bringing small kids so they would be secure
  • If you are desperate for something to eat there is a restaurant just a few seconds away from the apartment that does crepes, waffles, salads and ice cream however they only take cash.
  • I booked directly through Oia Collection as they had a good offer on if you booked directly with them however I would suggest looking at prices on booking.com to compare prices
  • The property includes a fridge, oven, cooktop etc so you would be able to make your own meals easily plus we were left with some basics in the fridge for our stay
  • The property was cleaned daily during our stay
  • The manager can organise a pick up from the airport for 25 euros for up to three persons, it makes it easier to find the property if you organise this.

I’m always going to be an afternoon tea lover and I’m rather happy to go back to a hotel that I know serves up a great gluten free afternoon tea more than once.  On Monday, Rachel and I headed into London to visit a Free From Fair and then to check out the new gluten free Royal Afternoon Tea at the Intercontinental Hotel in Park Lane, London.

I’m a big fan of the Intercontinental branded hotel chain and stay with them as often as I can as I know that I will be well looked after as a Platinum Ambassador member and that I will never go hungry as they look after their gluten free guests really well…actually all the various IHG branded hotels do!  <coughs loudly…remember that time that gluten free scones magically appeared at my breakfast table in Porto…seriously spoiled!>

Rachel and I started the afternoon tea proceedings with a Pimms cocktail…I sipped mine very slowly as I’m not a huge drinker these days and it did look rather too pretty to drink…well almost…

^^I love this photo of Rachel, she’s also one of the nicest bloggers I know and I will link up her review when she posts it as we all have different taste buds and expectations!

Sandwiches

The sandwiches which are part of the gluten free Royal Afternoon Tea included the following fillings – Salmon, Prawn Cocktail, Ham and Mustard, Coronation Chicken with Mango and Egg and Mayo.

I liked all the fillings especially the prawn cocktail however the only let down for me was the bread used for the ham and mustard sandwich; it was a tad too thick and dry.

I love open sandwiches as I find gluten free bread to be rather heavy and you end up filling up on savoury things instead of all the sugary treats that you’ve been dreaming about.

Scones

Gluten free scones are tricky little devils for any pastry chef and these scones passed my scone test with flying colours – they were easy to cut into, they didn’t break any teeth and they were yummy to eat.

The scones were quite small however I liked this idea as normally I can only eat one scone as I find them rather filling so smaller scones were gratefully received and eaten.

If I had any complaint it was over the jam…I didn’t find it sweet enough.  Only strawberry jam and clotted cream is served with the scones and to be honest this is the only way I think they should be served…I’m a traditionalist!  Rachel on the other hand loved the jam…everyone has different taste buds.

Pastries

Last by not least are the gluten free pastries and thankfully Rachel spotted no panna cotta – it’s become a staple on the gluten free pastry stand lately along with macaroons.  There was a really great variety on offer including a white chocolate cheesecake, carrot cake, flourless chocolate cake and gooseberry jelly with meringue.

I thought the quality of the gluten free pastries were fantastic however I would have loved to have seen a little Royal twist in the pastries…like a little chocolate crown sitting on top of the cheesecake like they had on the afternoon tea pastries for the gluten eating monsters.  Picky I know…the quality of the gluten free pastries were outstanding though.

Tea

Now I don’t know if you remember Luigi from my last visit to the Intercontinental Hotel Park Lane when I tried out their Scents of Summer Afternoon Tea

^^That’s Luigi just in case you needed reminding….well Luigi is still there and he’s a total tea making ninja!  If you’re lucky to see him, take all his suggestions on board…even the one when you think he might be going crazy talking about olive leaves…the tea works perfectly with your sarnies…infact all his recommendations worked perfectly with each course of the afternoon tea.

G and I experienced something similar when we had Afternoon Tea at the Intercontinental Amstel in Amsterdam a few years back and it adds a different dimension to the afternoon tea….see I told you that I love the Intercontinental brand!

Oh and don’t pass up the Iced Tea…oh my goodness, Rachel and I were in tea heaven with that baby.

Atmosphere

The Royal Afternoon Tea is served in the Wellington Lounge and it’s one of the most relaxing spots to have afternoon tea – comfy chairs, check – pillows, check – your own personal space, check – great natural light for instagram photos, check!  It’s got all the important things going for it.

Service

We had Luigi pamper us during our 4 hour afternoon tea experience (we may have stayed a tad longer than normal folks!)…we felt like princesses…Luigi fluffed up our pillows…I was totally prepared to kidnap Luigi.  But in all seriousness, the staff were all fantastic and in fabulous spirits and I love that you can have a laugh with the staff.  What I love about this hotel is that you don’t feel out of your depth, you feel welcomed the moment you step in the door, right through to the moment you leave.

Would I recommend the Gluten Free Royal Afternoon Tea at the Intercontinental Hotel Park Lane – definitely, at £36 pp which includes the service charge, I don’t think you can go wrong.  The quality of the food is fantastic and even on my third visit…or is it my fourth visit to the hotel now, I’ve yet to be disappointed with their afternoon tea.  You can read more or book your visit right here at the Intercontinental Hotel Park Lane website.

I have a hotel bucket list longer than my arm these days and it’s growing by the day with so many magical looking hotels almost opening daily around the world.  One hotel that was on my hotel bucket list was the Hotel Alfonso XIII in Seville.

My little sister had stayed at this property a few years ago and loved it and I was hoping to fall in love with the property as well.  Hotel Alfonso XIII is part of the Luxury Collection Hotel chain operated by Starwood Hotels so I knew to expect a grand hotel and exceptional service.

^^one of the lovely ladies that greets you…stained glass perfection!

We left Hotel Casa 1800 in Seville and walked to Hotel Alfonso XIII with our bags…apparently this was the quicker option than jumping in a taxi and it was a rather lovely walk in the sunshine for a few minutes so I wasn’t complaining.  First impressions…no doorman and a number of stairs to drag our bags up…there are doormen but just never there when you need them unfortunately!

We waited to be checked in as apparently on Valentines Day the hotel is packed (and charging silly money hence the reason why we didn’t stay…if they can get away with it why not says the accountant in me!)...we had to wait over 5 minutes to check in as a number of folks were checking out…I would like to say we were checked in with a smile but we weren’t…I dislike reception staff that look like they’ve sucked lemons all day…and they were like this the whole time during our stay!  Smiles are free people!

So are you ready for a snoop inside our room…we found our room which was impressive in size BUT…there’s going to be a number of BUT’s in this review…sorry…the room wasn’t sound proof as the windows didn’t close properly (G managed to fix this by shoving a few posh magazines into the window frame to make it sound proof)...

…and as G pointed out…there was dust all over the glasses in the mini bar (and you thought I was picky!).

…the room was very spacious…you could probably swing at least 5 cats in here no sweat…the rooms are tastifully decorated…if I was to be honest I thought they were a bit beige in nature (i.e. my polite way of saying boring) compared to the rest of the hotel…

We popped into the bar to check out out their drinks menu and maybe consume a beverage or ten…we waited and waited and waited to be served…we actually left as the staff were too busy talking amongst themselves to serve us or even clean the tables around us…we decided to forgo the whole idea of having afternoon tea treats at the hotel as well.

^^the bar is lovely if you can find someone who is willing to serve you.

G and I also had dinner at the hotel on our first night and we weren’t impressed…once again the service in the restaurant was haphazard and we had numerous people serving us…we had one fabulous waiter who knew what silver service was and understood gluten free requirements…the rest were just appalling…they forgot to charge us for our drinks…seriously if you want free drinks in Seville then head to Hotel Alfonso XIII (I did inform reception on check out to add the drinks onto our bill and her response, oh well they should have charged you at dinner…okay!)  The gluten free options were limited…and I mean limited…to a couple of fish dishes only.

The gluten free breakfast options the following morning were a lot better…a huge variety and a gluten free corner with so many options…nice to see Starwood upping their game when it comes to gluten free breakfast…

Strangely enough…I thought the Hotel Alfonso XIII would be truly amazing however the service was truly abysmal to say the least which just shows you can spend all the money in the world on a 5 star hotel and not receive 5 star service.  What makes a great hotel…for me, it’s service hands down!  The hotel itself is exquisite and I love the history that surrounds the hotel.

I did have a look through the trip advisor reviews over the days we stayed and most people were having similar experiences to ours…as one staff member pointed out to us…the hotel is running at full capacity due to the Valentine’s Day holiday…hmmm she got my are you freaking joking face…that’s not my problem…if you can’t handle the hotel at full capacity and offer your guests 5 star service then don’t book it to full capacity!

Would I recommend – ummm if you can get a special deal then check it out but in all honesty if we were to go back to Seville we would stay at the Hotel Casa 1800 and pop into Hotel Alfonso XIII for a snoop around…we didn’t think it was worth the money at over 250 euros a night off peak!

We did stay at the Grande Bretagne in Athens which is another Luxury Collection hotel by Starwood and loved it…plus we have booked two Luxury Collection hotels in Peru next month so am hoping this was just a little blimp in the Luxury Collection brand.
