Shhh don’t tell anyone but Athens is one of my favourite European cities…it’s authentic, charming and there is a dose of history around every corner.  We only had 48 hours in Athens on this occasion however we put it to good use by *cough* relaxing and eating.

We arrived late afternoon in Athens and caught a taxi from the airport (beware of the taxi drivers; we were pretty firm with our driver after he tried it on…just the once!) and checked into the Intercontinental Athens (not my favourite hotel in Athens and will write a review one day; it felt a bit dated, soulless and the service was mixed).

The first night we had access to the Intercontinental Club lounge where we enjoyed a light supper via the nibbles in the lounge and a few drinks while appreciating the view over the city.

The next morning we had a full day…to be fair we’ve done a number of the touristy things in Athens that you really should tick off on a visit to the city so we decided to climb a hill to get another view over the city from the Hill of the Muses…

After our stroll up a hill, we managed to end up in a middle of a religious procession that we had no idea about…thankfully a lovely old Greek lady grabbed me and explained that it was a particular saints day and we were close to her church (I have a funny feeling it was Catherine but I could be just making that up!) but it’s one of the reasons why I love Athens – the culture, history, religion and the friendly people that stop and chat to you…we held hands as she explained everything.  A truly lovely moment that I will cherish.

G decided that he needed a ride on a segway and I wasn’t really feeling up for a segway tour so while he whizzed around seeing the city from different vantage points (he really loved this tour!)...I used my feet and just lost myself in the streets of Athens…

The city felt empty of tourists, it was November so it was nice to chat to shop keepers and one in particular stopped me when he saw that my camera was on manual mode not auto…he loved photography so we had a chat…the Greeks love to chat.

Unfortunately I had fibroid issues on this day (once you overheat, it’s game over!) and ended up having to change my entire bottom half in the smallest and smelliest toilet in all of Athens…the joys of not being able to flush paper down the toilet makes public toilets reek even more than usual!  I’m still pretty proud of myself balancing on one shoe while trying to pull off and chuck on jeans in what felt like a tiny cage.  I survived to tell the tale!

I did ponder about buying a pair of slippers…I haven’t succumbed yet but next time a pair of these bad boys are coming home with me…along with another 25 litres of olive oil.

We decided to head up to the terrace bar at the hotel which offers fabulous views over Athens…

Travel Tips for Athens, Greece

  • The historical centre of Athens is quite compact so you can walk around with slightly pretty shoes if you fancy (just don’t do heels!)
  • I’ve stayed at a few hotels in Athens and my favourite is the Hotel Grande Bretagne (great location, lovely service, iconic hotel which is part of the Starwood chain of hotels) or there is the Intercontinental Athens (IHG chain of hotels) which is more business focussed and takes approximately 10 minutes to walk into the historic centre.
  • A taxi will cost you 38 euros from the airport to downtown Athens and this is a fixed rate but could change so check the board at the taxi stand – some taxi drivers will try and play funny buggers so I suggest having two 20 euro notes available rather than a 50 euro note and don’t listen to their bollocks about riots closing roads in central Athens – they just don’t want to take you all the way into the city
  • You can catch the metro or buses from the airport which takes approximately an hour and is a cheaper alternative.
  • If you are looking for a day trip from Athens then I would suggest Nafplio, the Islands of the Saronic Gulf or the Poseidon Temple which are all worth while and I’ve visited them all.  Plus I have a load more Athens tips here including where to buy Greek Sandals and another great view point.
  • Athens is really quite hip and it’s slowly becoming a foodie hotspot – Greek food is on the rise; simple but tasty flavours and you can easily find gluten free options!
  • The Hotel Grande Bretagne offer a lovely afternoon tea in their Winter Garden which is definitely worth checking out.
  • Athens is often dubbed as boring and overlooked as an entry / exit point for the Greek Islands; I always suggest 48 hours in Athens to really discover an authentic European city where history, locals and tourists mingle making it a great alternative city break destination.  Athens won’t be for everyone but I love it!

Kent…the county with too many options on where to visit!  In the end, I decided on exploring Broadstairs for a few reasons; I heard many good things about the town, there was sand rather than hideous pebbles and I found myself a gluten free afternoon tea…meeting my friend Amy and her two little boys, Peanut and Blueberry were the icing on the Kent cake!

England Travel Inspiration - Fancy a day trip from London to the seaside then why not head on the train to Broadstairs in Kent; Viking Bay is a gorgeous secluded bay for a swim. Charles Dickens called Broadstairs home for a few years and you can now have afternoon tea in his former home which is now a hotel that offers beautiful views to the sea. I popped down from Bedford to Broadstairs on the train…it was quicker than driving and meant I could read a book…but in reality spent the whole time scrolling through instagram.

You know I travel far and wide to sample afternoon tea so a 250 mile car journey to Stoke on Trent to try out the gluten free afternoon tea at World of Wedgwood Tea Room seemed like a ride in the park.  I was in Staffordshire to tick off another county in my New Years Resolution challenge and it felt like an age since G and I both had afternoon tea together.

Why not read my review of the gluten free afternoon tea at World of Wedgwood Tea Rooms in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire; the county is home to the potteries so make sure you pick up a tea cup and saucer on your travels...warning the images will make you drool!

I should warn you right now…you really need to water the money tree prior to visiting the World of Wedgwood as you’ll want to buy everything!

Sandwiches

Let’s start with the gluten free sarnies, the bread was soft and fluffy albeit a tad cold from sitting in a chiller…this happens everywhere.  The fillings included ham, egg, smoked salmon, cucumber and coronation chicken; all the classic fillings you would expect.

If I’m really honest (which I am), I did find the filling a little bland for my liking unfortunately.

Scones

Ahhh gluten free scones…the nemesis of so many pastry chefs!  I wasn’t too sure what to expect however they passed my scone test with flying colours (they were easy to cut into, they didn’t break a tooth and they were yummy).

The scones were served warm and were light and fluffy…better than a lot of scones that you find in London at the really posh hotels that charge twice the price for afternoon tea!

If there was one thing letting the scone team down it was the jam…it felt cheap and nasty i.e. no taste at all which was slight disappointing.

Pastries

The pastries included a beautiful gluten free mini victoria sponge filled with fresh cream…it was divine…traditional but spot on for an afternoon tea pastry.

A gluten free chocolate brownie which was thick and gooey…you know I’m not a fan of brownies however I did take two bites rather than the normal one before passing onto G to finish the brownie off.  The lucky last pastry was a chocolate basket filled with mousse which was delightfully light.

Tea

I went for the Empress Catherine tea; I’m not sure what is wrong with me at the moment however I can’t drink hot drinks so ended up enjoying a very cold glass of water with lemon.  Our tea wasn’t refreshed during the afternoon tea experience.

The Wedgwood Tea Room is simply gorgeous; on Sunday there were only two couples enjoying afternoon tea…and one of them was us!

Honestly, the photos don’t do the tea rooms justice…the colours and design made me want to pinch the mirrors off the walls…and lust over wallpaper (which has never happened in my life before!).

Afternoon Tea for the Gluten Eating Monsters

So G’s world scone rankings had a shake up after our afternoon tea at World of Wedgwood…the gluten loaded scones knocked Claridge’s from their long held second place ranking…and G is a scone connoisseur so this is HUGE news.  (Current Scone Rankings as per G: 1st place, Grande Bretagne in Athens; 2nd place, World of Wedgwood and 3rd place, Claridge’s).

Like me, G thought the afternoon tea was extremely good value but was disappointed over the jam situation.  I think it can be safely assumed that he enjoyed his mini lemon meringue pie and the Victoria sponge as there was of moaning…in a good way!

Service

The service was very relaxed and friendly.

Would I recommend the Gluten Free Afternoon Tea at World of Wedgwood Tea Room, Stoke on Trent – Definitely! We purchased an afternoon tea package which included afternoon tea for two persons, entry into the museum and the factory tour for £49 which I think is amazing value.  The afternoon tea alone is worth £25pp so prebook and grab this deal if you can.  You can find more information on the afternoon tea here.

The Tea Room was very quiet on Sunday and I was told that it’s very busy during the week so if you want a relaxing afternoon tea in Staffordshire then highly recommending popping in for scones and tea during the weekend.

You know me, I love a good castle hunting expedition…or so I thought!  All the photos I’d seen of Warwick Castle had me weak at the knees so when I decided to visit Warwickshire, Warwick Castle seemed a no brainer however it was exploring Warwick itself that had me smiling.

I arrived early at Warwick Castle (way before opening time!); strangely the night before when I was finally doing some research, I read that the castle could be a bit hit or miss for folks.  Warwick Castle is part of Merlin Entertainment that runs The Dungeons, Madame Tussauds and Thorpe Park to name a few…this should have caused the warning bells to start along with the eye watering ticket price…£25.20 if bought on the day (which I stupidly did!)…my advice…don’t visit this castle if you love castles and only visit if you hold a Merlin Pass!

I’m going to say it right at the start, I personally think Warwick Castle is England’s most overrated and overpriced tourist attraction that I’ve ever visited!

As the castle wasn’t open, I decided to wander into Warwick, the town itself is only a few moments away…it’s rather cute…full of cheerful bunting…

Unfortunately the museum held inside Lord Leycester Hospital wasn’t open either…I got on the road a tad too early…but it was still lovely to see the building from the outside…

^^I’m going to put it out there…photographing wobbly buildings isn’t easy!

In my rush to leave the house early, I didn’t have breakfast so I thought it was perfectly reasonably to have afternoon tea at the Thomas Oken Tea Rooms for breakfast…at 10am…since we’re all friends, let’s just call it morning tea (and I wonder why I’m fat…porridge vs a tiered cake stand…hmmm let’s see which one I would choose!)…

…the Thomas Oken Tea Rooms are located right by the entrance of Warwick Castle in Warwick itself and if you’ve visited Warwick before, it’s in the old Dolls Museum…the building is wobbly (yes!)

…and the gluten free scones at Thomas Oken Tea Rooms passed my scone test with flying colours (they were easy to cut into, they didn’t break any teeth and they were scummy!).

Suddenly realising that Warwick Castle was finally open (I may have left half a scone behind!), I popped through the castle wall and into the grounds (after buying that silly priced ticket!)…

…the castle is magnificent from the outside however be prepared for lots of little people…you know the ones…they run wild and push to get you out of the way (I got pushed in the fanny area twice by the group of kids speaking Spanish and my feet where stood on by the English speaking ones)...you can start to see one reason why I didn’t enjoy Warwick Castle…

The castle has had a major refurbishment and it does look good from the outside however I found the interior to be…TACKY…strangely quite a few people agreed with this statement when I posted about it on instagram after my visit…

I totally get that they have turned Warwick Castle into an English version of Disneyland (and to be fair I visited Disneyland last week and I didn’t find it anywhere near as tacky as Warwick Castle so that says something!)...they have dumbed things down for the kids and it’s very focussed towards families which is perfectly fine to get kids into learning about history etc…BUT DID YOU NEED TO WRECK A BEAUTIFUL CASTLE TO DO THIS!

…I did feel like I was getting herded around the castle and left in under 45 minutes…that’s how much I didn’t enjoy my visit.  I was hoping to have a wander around to take in the views like this one from the bedroom window but everything was blocked off!

Even seeing King Henry VIII didn’t cheer me up…and you know how much I love this naughty ol’ King…he would be on my “who would you have at your dinner party list, dead or alive”…King Henry VIII and Julie Andrews without a doubt…and thinking about things now, my family and as many of my ancestors that we could find…I normally cook enough to feed an army anyway…learning about history including your own family history is so important.

Okay so I didn’t love Warwick Castle however I did think Warwick was super cute and I had an extremely yummy afternoon tea at Thomas Oken Tea Rooms.  I think I would head back to Warwickshire at some point in the future as I definitely picked the wrong place to explore this county; where would you recommend?

Travel Tips for Warwickshire

  • I can’t recommend the Thomas Oken Tea Rooms in Warwick enough for their gluten free options, pop in for a visit and you won’t be disappointed.
  • Take time to wander around Warwick as it’s a sweet little town with plenty of wobbly buildings to enjoy
  • If you plan to visit Warwick Castle then look at finding discounted ticket prices or purchasing a Merlin Pass or book well in advance (do not pay £25.20 at the gate for entrance like me!)…it’s not a cheap day out.  You can buy tickets online in advance which are cheaper – do this 5+ days in advance to get the best deal.
  • Take flat comfortable shoes as there is some climbing to do around the castle
  • There is plenty of parking at Warwick Castle
  • If you want to spend a night at a castle then I would highly recommend staying at Thornbury Castle in Gloucestershire rather than at Warwick Castle; it’s totally worth it to be princess for a night!
  • You can read more about Warwickshire at the official website.
